The Calgary Wranglers looked to snap their losing streak and get back to the reputation they had to start this season as one of the league’s best. They played their last game of the three game road trip on Wednesday and did not get a single puck past Ville Husso, who made his debut with the Gulls.
They were shut out by a final score of 4-0 and added another game to the longest losing streak in team history.

Lineup notes

The Wranglers rolled with a very similar lineup to what they had on Sunday. Changes included going back to Devin Cooley after Waltteri Ignatjew in net against the Ontario Reign and Tyson Barrie returned to the Wranglers lineup for his first game since clearing waivers. Charles Martin came out of the lineup to make room for Barrie.
Brett Davis also returned to the lineup in exchange for Sam Honzek, who missed this game with a lower body injury. Honzek’s timeline for return is uncertain at this time but he was the only player listed on the injury update prior to this game.

Game at a glance

Cooley faced off against seasoned goalie, Ville Husso for his first game as a Gull since being acquired from the Detriot’s AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. The Wranglers came out hungry in this game and made a huge push in the first period to try and get started on the right side of things for this game.
They peppered Husso with shots and got an even better opportunity in the zone when they were on the first power play of the game at 8:20. Their power play units couldn’t find a goal on this opportunity but continued to push for that first goal. Calgary had a penalty to kill of their own late in the period and it ended up rolling into the second.
After 20 minutes of play, the game was scoreless and Calgary outshot the Gulls 17-6. In the second period, things very quickly took a turn. Right off the opening faceoff Justin Bailey took off on a breakaway and scored one of the fastest goals in a period in AHL history. Just four seconds into the frame, it was a 1-0 game for the home team.
Just over two minutes later, the Gulls struck again with a goal from Sasha Pastujov at 2:07. He picked up a rebound and skated it behind the net for a wraparound past Cooley. The 2-0 score held through the rest of the middle frame and each side had a penalty to kill off in the back half of the period. Shots in the second period favoured San Diego 13-8.
The Gulls found their other two goals in the third period with the first one coming at 8:30. San Diego was passing the puck around the zone to set something up and Easton Brodzinski went up the middle and ripped a shot over the shoulder of Cooley.
Calgary’s zone time and shot attempts were declining further in the third and what put the final nail in the coffin was an empty netter at 14:31, just five seconds after Devin Cooley went off for the extra attacker.
The Wranglers had a handful of shots between this last goal and the final horn but could not break that shutout. This game ended in a 4-0 decision, putting Calgary up to eight straight losses. Shots finished 34-28 favouring the Wranglers.

Next up

The Wranglers have one more chance to pick up a win in February with an upcoming weekend series against the Abbotsford Canucks at home. They will host the Canucks on Friday for their next game at 7:00 p.m. MT.
