We’re into the portion of training camp where waivers come into play, and the Calgary Flames have reportedly placed a pair of players on waivers. Per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Flames have exposed defender Jonathan Aspirot and forward Clark Bishop on the waiver wire.
Presumably, these waiver placements are with the intention of assigning these two players to the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers, who begin training camp on Monday at Winsport. Aspirot and Bishop would be eligible for such an assignment if they clear waivers on Sunday at noon MT.
Aspirot, 25, was signed to a two-way NHL contract for this season after playing last season with the Wranglers on an AHL contract. He’s a left shot defender who’s probably an AHL power play specialist at this point, but he’s also a reliable AHLer who’s played five seasons in that league and can help out younger players. Aspirot didn’t dress for any pre-season games this year.
Bishop, 28, is in the second year of a two year, two-way NHL deal he signed last summer. A 2014 draft choice by Carolina, Bishop is a centre that can also play the wing, and he plays a really reliable, consistent, sometimes physical brand of hockey. He’s played 47 NHL games between stints with Carolina and Ottawa, and his experience – at both NHL and AHL levels – make him a valuable and useful player for the Wranglers as they have younger players getting into their mix. Bishop dressed for two pre-season games.
The Flames host the Vancouver Canucks in exhibition action on Saturday night.
