Ryan Lomberg, a left handed winger, has been with the Calgary Flames for two seasons after coming from a stint with the Stanley Cup winning Florida Panthers. He has quickly become a fan-favourite and has been vocal about how much he loves being on the team.
Expectations
Coming off of a low-scoring season with 3 goals, 10 assists and 13 points in 80 games in the 2024-25 season, it was not expected for Lomberg to get many points on the board. Although he is not a big scorer, it was anticipated that he would make things fun in many other aspects including his physicality, speed and, most notably, his incredible attitude.
Lomberg’s physicality was set to be an asset on the team due to them being a younger group with less physical players. He is also one of the fastest players on the team, which was not expected to change. Although speed is not incredibly crucial, it can be a bonus, especially for smaller players like him. (Maybe he would work himself onto the penalty kill using that speed.)
Although Lomberg had a few expectations in his actual game play, most of the anticipation comes from his attitude and positive atmosphere that he brings to the team. He has the ability to keep the morale up on and off the ice, which the team was lacking going into the season.
Performance
During the 2025-26 season, Lomberg performed – scoring wise – as anticipated, with only 4 goals, 5 assists and 9 points in 57 games, which is less games and less points than last season. He also was considered a healthy scratch going into the end of the season, only playing in seven games after the Olympic break as the team began to evaluate several younger players.
He also did not rack up much ice time when he was playing, averaging under 10 minutes on the ice per game as a fourth liner. When he was on the ice though, he benefited the team physically, cementing his role as one of the best fighters on the team.
It was apparent throughout the season that he lacked offensive output, but he continuously made up for it with his leadership and positive attitude. Throughout the season, fans just continued to grow their admiration for Lomberg solely based off of the incredible atmosphere that he brings to the team that truly would not be there without him.
Outlook
After the season came to a close, and even before the trade deadline, Lomberg’s future with the Flames remained – and still remains – unknown. Speculation is continuously growing that he will not be with the team next season, particularly as the team leans into its youth movement. Lomberg is going into the post-season as a pending unrestricted free agent.
Although his outlook with the team is currently up in the air, Lomberg has been very vocal about how much he loves the city and the team and how much he wants to stay here if possible.
Not only does Lomberg himself want to stay, so do the fans. He brings positivity to the game that is not often seen and people want that vibe to stick around for another season.
All this to say, his outlook with the team is unknown, but if he does stay, it is probable that his physicality and speed won’t waver. He isn’t projected to get on the board any more than he is now, but again, that is not what he is known for.
