Notes and expectations

It was an important week in the NHL with the trade deadline hitting at 1:00 p.m. MT on Friday. Sometimes, there is a trickle down to the AHL if prospects are dealt as part of trade packages, but this year, that was not the case. The Flames did make a few moves, but it didn’t include any subtractions from the Wranglers’ roster. Anyone who was on the Wranglers roster at the deadline is now eligible for the Calder Cup Playoffs if they qualify. That includes Matvei Gridin and Hunter Brzustewicz.
Matvei Gridin was a temporary addition on deadline day as he was announced as a transaction back down to the Wranglers. Craig Conroy confirmed Gridin will play a game in the AHL due to the transaction rules, so he will be along with the team for at least Saturday’s game before reassignment to the NHL. Conroy also made another future Wranglers addition known in the trade involving Brennan Othmann for Jacob Battaglia. Othmann will join the Wranglers at some point but his timeline is unknown.
The last time Calgary’s AHL squad was in action, they were looking a bit lean on forwards. Rory Kerins, Parker Bell and Lucas Ciona all missed the last game with injuries. Kerins and Ciona with lower body injuries and Bell with an upper body injury. They didn’t have a set timeline on return so it’s possible some or all of them are ready to be back for this series. If they are not quite ready to return, then an 11 forward and seven defencemen lineup may very well be the case in one or both of these games, with the current depth they have.
This series starts on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. MT and continues for a back to back on Sunday with a 4:00 p.m. MT puck drop. Streaming options are available for a fee on Flo Hockey. FlamesNation contributors Ryan Pike and I will have updates on X (formerly Twitter).
