The second round has been feast or famine for the Calgary Flames over the years.
There are some years where they’ve gotten Hall of Fame players like Joe Nieuwendyk. And there are some years where they haven’t had nearly as much luck.
In 2026, the Flames have four second-round picks. Let’s check in at how they’ve done in the second round historically.

Their last five drafts

Here are the last five drafts worth of second-round selections for the Flames:
Year

2024

Notes:
  • The Flames acquired Colorado’s 2025 second-rounder from Washington as part of the Andrew Mangiapane trade in 2024 (and used it select Theo Stockselius).
  • They traded their own second-round pick to Philadelphia as part of the Joel Farabee/Morgan Frost trade in 2024.
  • The Flames acquired Dallas’ 2024 second-rounder as part of the Chris Tanev trade in 2024 (and used it to select Jacob Battaglia).
  • The Flames acquired Florida’s 2022 second-rounder as part of the Sam Bennett trade in 2021, then traded that pick to Seattle as part of the Calle Jarnkrok trade in 2022.
Of the last few second-rounders: William Stromgren played NHL games in 2025-26, Topi Ronni had his rights renounced due to legal issues, Etienne Morin and Andrew Basha played in the AHL in 2025-26 to varying degrees of success, Jacob Battaglia was traded to the Rangers, and Theo Stockselius played in the SHL in 2025-26.
Oh, and 2020 second-rounder Yan Kuznetsov became an NHL regular in 2025-26.

Historical hits

The Flames have selected two 1,000-game NHLers in the second round: Joe Nieuwendyk and Paul Ranheim.
They’ve also drafted a few other notables, such as Eric Vail, Guy Chouinard, Steve Konroyd, Stephane Matteau and Rasmus Andersson.

Historical misses

The Flames have made their challenges in the second round.
For example: between 2001 and 2010, Flames second-rounders Andrei Medvedev, Andrei Taratukhin, Brian O’Connell, Tim Ramholt and Mitch Wahl combined to play one game in the NHL. And the one game was Ramholt’s, and it lasted just 45 seconds. So between trades and the picks they made, it was sort of a lost decade in the second round.
In 1990, the Flames made three second-round picks: Nicolas Perreault, Vesa Viitakoski and Etienne Belzile. The three players combined for 23 NHL games, all by Viitakoski.
Here’s hoping that the Flames can fare better with their four second-rounders this year.
