The Flames haven’t had recent breakout successes in second round, but several solid picks

There’s a certain amount of notoriety around being a first-round NHL draft choice. But several of the NHL’s best and brightest have been selected in the second round after being passed over in the first run-through.
For the Calgary Flames, you could argue that some of the most exciting prospects in their system are second-round choices. They haven’t had any breakout success stories recently, but their list of recent second-rounders features many promising youngsters that may break out in the near future.
Their last five drafts
Here are the last five drafts worth of first-round selections for the Flames:
Year | Pick | Player | Team |
2024 | 62 | Kingston (OHL) | |
2024 | 41 | Medicine Hat (WHL)
2023 | 48 | Moncton (QMJHL)
2022 | 59 | Tappara (U20 SM-sarja)
2021 | 45 | MODO Hockey (J20 Nationell)
2020 | 50 | University of Connecticut (NCAA) |
Notes:
- The Flames acquired Dallas’ 2024 second-rounder as part of the Chris Tanev trade in 2024 (and used it to select Jacob Battaglia).
- The Flames acquired Florida’s 2022 second-rounder as part of the Sam Bennett trade in 2021, then traded that pick to Seattle as part of the Calle Jarnkrok trade in 2022.
Have the Flames hit home runs in the second round? Not quite. Not yet, at least. But aside from Topi Ronni, whose rights the club renounced – and who was trending poorly independent of his legal issues – the club has made a ton of solid selections in the second round of late.
Yan Kuznetsov? He’s played NHL games and is a really good AHL two-way defender. William Strömgren? After moving to the AHL from Sweden, he’s becoming a really solid forward and could push for NHL work with a bit more consistency. Etienne Morin’s team just won the QMJHL league championship. Andrew Basha’s team just won the WHL league championship. Jacob Battagalia just rattled off a 40-goal, 90-point season.
If they haven’t hit home runs lately, at the very least they’re hitting for average quite well and racking up quite a few doubles.
Historical hits
The biggest recent second-round home run is undoubtedly Rasmus Andersson in 2015.
But if you roll the calendar back a bit, there are a bunch of pretty important Flames that were selected in the second. Among them are Eric Vail (1973), Guy Chouinard (1974), Paul Ranheim (1984) and Joe Nieuwendyk (1985).
Historical misses
There are many who are skeptical about drafting goaltenders early. And two of their data points in the “please don’t do that” ledger are 2014 second-rounder Mason McDonald (zero NHL games) and 2016 second-rounder Tyler Parsons (zero NHL games). And 2001 second-rounder Andrei Medvedev (zero NHL games). And 1997 second-rounder Evan Lindsay (zero NHL games).
Medvedev’s selection came at the end of a stretch of years where the Flames kept taking Russian players in the second round that hardly ever came to North America, including Dmitri Ryabkin in 1994, Pavel Smirnov in 1995 and Dmitri Kokorev in 1997. 2001 pick Andrei Taratukhin came over for just a single AHL season.
