Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday!
This week in 1989 (Nov. 3), the Calgary Flames named Brad McCrimmon captain.
He only held the captaincy for the one season, however, before being dealt to the Detroit Red Wings for a second-round pick in the 1990 draft.
Acquired years earlier in 1987 for draft picks, McCrimmon was a key cog in helping the Flames lift the cup in 1989. In three seasons with the Flames, McCrimmon scored 16 goals and 83 points in 231 games.
McCrimmon’s final year saw issues arise between him and bench boss Terry Crisp. The two disagreed with how the defencemen were being used and that offseason Calgary dealt him to Detroit.
McCrimmon played another seven years in the NHL before retiring in 1997. He spent time coaching in the WHL and NHL.
In 2011, he became the head coach of the KHL’s Lokomotiv Yaroslavl but never coached a regular-season game with the club as he was killed in the club’s plane crash en route to their first game.
