For the second consecutive season, the Florida Panthers have defeated the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final.
This is the final edition of What’s Going On In The Playoffs, where we look at how the post-season is shaping up.
Let’s take a look at how the remaining three games went in the series between the two teams!

Game 4

A former Calgary Flame got the scoring started for the Panthers in Game 4, as Matthew Tkachuk scored midway through the first period. Just over five minutes later, he scored his second of the game to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. In the final minute of the first, Anton Lundell scored his sixth of the postseason to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
Heading into the second period, the Oilers pulled Stuart Skinner for Calvin Pickard. That seemed to wake the Oilers up, as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored three and a half minutes into the second. With just over seven minutes left, Darnell Nurse scored a tough-angle shot to bring the Oilers to within one. It took just over two minutes for the Oilers to tie the game thanks to a Vasily Podkolzin rebound.
With just under six and a half minutes left in the game, Jake Walman scored to give the Oilers their first lead since midway through the second period of Game 2. But just like the Oilers in Game 2, the Panthers scored with under 20 seconds left to send the game to overtime. It was the last time the Oilers led at any point in this series.
There, Leon Draisaitl broke the record for most overtime goals in a single post-season, scoring midway through the period off a fortunate bounce, sending the teams back to Alberta tied at two.

Game 5

It was all the Panthers from there. Midway through the first, Brad Marchand scored to give the Panthers a lead. Another former Flame, Sam Bennett, scored with just under two minutes left to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
There was no magical comeback for the Oilers in this game, as Marchand scored his second of the game. The Oilers finally got on the board 2:24 later, but the Panthers answered less than a minute later to restore their three-goal lead. Corey Perry scored a late goal to bring the Oilers to within two, but Eetu Luostarinen scored an empty-netter for the 3-2 series lead.

Game 6

The Oilers went with a whimper in Game 6 as the Panthers won their second consecutive Stanley Cup. Five minutes into the game, Sam Reinhart gave the Panthers the lead, the fifth consecutive game they scored first. The game-winner was scored by Tkachuk with 47 seconds left in the first.
Late in the second, Reinhart scored his second of the game to take a 3-0 lead. The Oilers pulled their netminder early, with Reinhart scoring his hat trick. He then added another empty-netter for his fourth of the game and a 5-0 Panther lead.
Podkolzin ruined Sergei Bobrovsky’s shutout with 4:42 left in the game, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Oilers choked for the second consecutive season.
Before the Stanley Cup was handed out, former Calgary Flame Sam Bennett was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy, given to the playoff MVP. Moreover, Matthew Tkachuk won his second Stanley Cup. A.J. Greer, a player who played for the Flames in 2023-24, won his first career Stanley Cup.
Greer celebrated at the Elbo Room by encouraging some salty chants from Panthers fans. (Uh… beware, there’s some cussin’ in this video.)
On the Oilers’ side of things, former Flames Troy Stecher, Derek Ryan, and Brett Kulak fell short for the second consecutive season.
See you next season with the return of What’s Going On In The Pacific Division!
