Where does Rasmus Andersson rank among all-time great Flames blueliners?

Way back in 2015, the Calgary Flames selected Rasmus Andersson, an import defenceman from the Ontario Hockey League’s Barrie Bolts, at 53rd overall.
Back in January, after 11 years in the organization and parts of 10 seasons on the NHL roster, the Flames and Andersson parted ways when he was sent to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for Zach Whitecloud, Abram Wiebe, a conditional 2027 first-round pick and a conditional 2028 second-round pick.
On Thursday night, Andersson will line up for a game against the Flames for the very first time in his over 600-game NHL career.
With Andersson facing the Flames for the first time, we were curious how he stacked up statistically against other defenders in franchise history.
Games Played: 584
Six blueliners in Flames history have played more games than Andersson: Mark Giordano (949), Robyn Regehr (826), Al MacInnis (803), TJ Brodie (634), Gary Suter (617) and Jamie Macoun (586).
Goals: 57
Six blueliners in Flames history have score more goals than Andersson: MacInnis (213), Giordano (143), Suter (128), Paul Reinhart (109), Dion Phaneuf (75) and Macoun (62).
Assists: 204
Five defencemen in Flames history have more assists than Andersson: MacInnis (609), Suter (436), Giordano (366), Reinhart (336) and Brodie (218).
Points: 261
Five defencemen in Flames history have more points than Andersson: MacInnis (822), Suter (564), Giordano (509), Reinhart (445) and Brodie (261).
If you’re judging Andersson purely on offensive production, he’s either sixth or seventh in franchise history. And some of the names ahead of him include a Hall of Famer in MacInnis and a couple superb ’80s producers in Sutter and Reinhart. In terms of players who played in a similar era as Andersson, his comparables are basically Giordano and Brodie. On a per-game basis, Andersson (0.45) is behind Giordano (0.54), but ahead of Brodie (0.42).
If you look further, to intangibles, Andersson wore a letter as an alternate captain for his last four seasons with the Flames and was seen as an important cultural figure in the locker room for his maturity, honesty, and willingness to speak harsh truths at times – both to teammates and the media. Flat-out, Andersson was somebody who really cared about being a Flame, and let it show often.
He was also incredibly entertaining, in terms of both on-ice trash talk and his infamous post-goal staredowns of opposition fans – which date back to his 100th NHL point back in 2021-22 and were brought back throughout his last two seasons with the Flames.
(If you want to knock Andersson’s run with the Flames: just 27 playoff games, tied for 17th all-time among defenders with Vegas teammate Noah Hanifin.)
If you’re judging by numbers and impact, Andersson had a heck of a run with the Flames. He might not quite be in the franchise’s upper echelon – he lacks the high-level team or individual success during his tenure – but he stacks up nicely in the second tier of all-time blueliners.
