The Calgary Wranglers and Ontario Reign got a day away from game action before returning to close off their series on Tuesday night. They had a good start to this game but Ontario capitalized on a weak spot in net coverage in the middle frame that put them into a very comfortable lead for the third period.
Calgary was unable to crawl back and they dropped this game 6-1.

Lineup notes

The team provided an injury update prior to this game noting Devin Cooley is still on a day-to-day status. Also on the report is Joni Jurmo, who is also listed as day-to-day. Jurmo hasn’t played since January 1st against the Abbotsford Canucks.
Otherwise, the Wranglers rolled with their same lineups as Sunday with the exception of their netminder.

Game at a glance

The Wranglers went back to Connor Murphy in net for this game and the Reign switched over to Pheonix Copley for the start between the pipes. The goaltenders were not getting tested too much in the opening half of the period but that started to change just shy of the 10 minute mark. Ontario got a grade A scoring chance that Murphy turned away and that seemed to change the tone of the game from there.
Despite the Reign starting to generate some momentum, it would be Calgary who would open up the scoring later in the period. David Silye scored the first goal of the game on a breakaway he went forward backhand on. Adam Klapka and Jeremie Poirier assisted on this marker at 16:35.
Calgary didn’t even fully celebrate this goal when the skaters all came together in a fuss that resulted in offsetting minors against Martin Chromiak and Jeremie Poirier. Towards the end of these penalties, the Wranglers were called for another roughing call against Martin Frk, which put the Reign on the power play.
The Reign capitalized on this man advantage with a goal went off the crossbar and popped right out. The home team celebrated as if they scored and the linesman waved it as good. They took a bit of time to review it and confirmed the puck came off the back post and it remained a good goal. Charles Hudon was credited with the equalizer at 19:33 assisted by Glenn Gawdin and Reilly Walsh.
As the opening 20 minutes came to a close, the score remained evened up 1-1 and shots were 8-6 for Ontario. The second period didn’t start to great for Calgary as Dryden Hunt was called for slashing just 11 seconds in. The Reign were able to score on this opportunity by burying a low rebound at 1:42. The goal was scored by Andre Lee and assisted by Tyler Madden and Caleb Jones.
Just over two minutes later, Taylor Ward scored the third Reign goal of the night off a top shelf shot. It wasn’t even five minutes into the second period and Ontario was already up 3-1. Calgary went the first 7:45 without a shot but it was Dryden Hunt who got one on goal by that point. Nothing to bridge the gap in scoring, however.
At 13:56, the Reign scored again off a top shelf shot from Tyler Madden then again at 16:57 on a shorthanded breakaway that Francesco Pinelli shot guess where? Top shelf again. The Wranglers found this spot on Murphy and kept picking it.
It looked as if Connor Murphy’s time in this game might be numbered but he did finish out the period. After a very one-sided second, the Reign led the Wranglers 5-1 after 40 minutes. Shots through the middle frame were 18-9 Ontario.
Waltteri Ignatjew came out for the third and was in net for the rest of the game. The Reign had the luxury of a four goal lead to sit back a bit in the third but still added one more to their lead to really seal the deal. Samuel Fagemo scored at 7:31 when a shot from the point rebounded right on the tape of his stick and into the back of the net.
Calgary couldn’t do much to keep up and the influx of shots died right down in the last frame of regulation. It was too far of a goal differential to bother pulling Igantjew in the final minutes and Ontario took a 6-1 win over Calgary and they split the series. Shots finished 33-20 for Ontario with Murphy facing 26 and Ignatjew facing seven.

Scoring stat summary

David Silye – 1G
Adam Klapka -1A
Jeremie Poirier – 1A
