The Calgary Wranglers and San Diego Gulls broke up their week of hockey with a one-game meeting on Wednesday night. Both were looking for a win after falling in shootouts in their last games. The Wranglers didn’t start things very well with two shorthanded goals in the first period but battled back with a comeback effort that helped them finish on top. They beat the Gulls 4-3 and maintain a perfect record against them this season.
Wranglers lines
Jakob Pelletier – Rory Kerins – Dryden Hunt
William Stromgren – Sam Morton – Walker Duehr
Sam Honzek – Clark Bishop – Martin Frk
Parker Bell – David Silye – Lucas Ciona
Artem Grushnikov – Ilya Solovyov
Jarred Tinordi – Jeremie Poirier
Yan Kuznetsov – Hunter Brzustewicz

Lineup notes
Adam Klapka was out of the lineup and up with the Flames for this game so the Wranglers had to bring in two more forwards to go back to a 12 and eight combination among the forwards and defencemen. These two were Martin Frk and Parker Bell. Both last played on Nov. 10 in the Henderson Silver Knights series. Jonathan Aspirot was the odd defender out that was scratched for this game.
Game at a glance
This game brought the battle of the Wranglers past and present with Oscar Dansk in net for the Gulls and Devin Cooley in net for the Wranglers. Calgary looked to get the first good opportunity in the offensive zone early with a power play coming just 1:39 into the game. Unfortunately, this hurt them as Jan Mysak sprung himself on a breakaway and scored a shorthanded goal at 2:30.
At the end of the power play, the Wranglers caught the Gulls on a bad change. With some hustle from Wranglers Captain Clark Bishop, he got the puck up to Lucas Ciona, who buried the tying goal. This goal came at 4:07 and was also assisted by Yan Kuznetsov.
A little later in the period, the Wranglers were on another power play that unfortunately had the same result as the first one. The Gulls were able to clear the puck and Roland McKeown scored the second shorthanded goal for the home team of the evening.
On that same power play, the Wranglers answered back and evened up the game once again. After moving the puck around in the zone, Dryden Hunt and Rory Kerins set up Jeremie Poirier to pick and rip his first goal of the season.

The Wranglers got another chance on the power play, but this one ended up turning into a four-on-four. After this expired, the Gulls got the lead once more with a goal with just 15 seconds to go in the frame. Pavol Regenda beat Cooley off the faceoff win and put the Gulls up 3-2.
That is how the score remained at the end of the first period and the Wranglers were outshot 9-7 in the opening 20 minutes. In the second period, the Wranglers came out with much more pep in their steps and some action to go with it. Just a few minutes in, Lucas Ciona was laid out along the boards and went to make the perpetrator pay with a fight at 3:02.

While Ciona didn’t have the upper hand in the fight, it did keep the energy going for the Wranglers. Just 25 seconds later, they got deep into the Gulls’ zone and Jakob Pelletier was on the doorstep to tap in a pass from Rory Kerins. Ilya Solovyov also assisted on this third equalizing goal of the evening.
Jakob Pelletier is left undefended and in the perfect place to score this tying goal.
A few minutes later, Dryden Hunt was sent to the box for slashing and interestingly enough, the Wranglers gave their opponents a taste of their own medicine. Jakob Pelletier helped force a turnover in the neutral zone and set up Walker Duehr for a breakaway that he buried. Their first go-ahead goal of the evening came at 8:46.

This score remained for the rest of the period and by the end of the frame, the Wranglers were up 4-3. Calgary also outshot San Diego 8-6 in the second period. In the third, Calgary was in lead protection mode not wanting to give the Gulls an inch.
San Diego pulled Dansk at 18:57 to push for one more goal but the Wranglers held the line until the end. The final score was 4-3 and Calgary outshot the Anaheim Ducks affiliates 22-19. Walker Duehr was the only Wrangler on the three stars and picked up the first star for his game-winning goal.
