With the lone exception of the Heat playing three games this week, everyone is heading off to enjoy their holiday break. How nice, unless you play for the Heat.
In case you missed it:
- Here’s last week’s update.
- Your Hitmen report.
- Your Stockton report.
- Digging into Brad Treliving’s love of dealing first rounders.
- Transaction news!
- Jon Gillies made a brief appearance on the Flames bench to fill in for an injured Mike Smith.
- Then he, Andrew Mangiapane, and Ryan Lomberg went back down to the AHL to clear room for Smith and Mikael Backlund, and Kerby Rychel came up.
- Don’t count Lomberg out though – his move was only to keep the Flames salary cap compliant.

Big news for Joly this week. The musketeer’s rocky relationship with the Baie-Comeau Drakkar came to a head on Sunday, when he was traded to the Victoriaville Tigres. Joly had been publicly called out by his coach earlier in the season for his performances and couldn’t find his way out of the doghouse, so he asked for a trade. From Le Droit:
Despite his efforts to defend himself defensively, he never felt that his game was appreciated by his head coach Martin Bernard, nor his general manager Steve Ahern who even allowed a joke against him in an interview with The Sun Wednesday.“As for his talent, no one has any doubt. D’Artagnan is also a good person and a valued teammate, but respecting the speed limits on the ice is not always appropriate,” said Ahern, who found Joly was not playing with enough intensity. The principal concerned did not want to respond to this criticism. He heard worse far from the microphones of the reporters.“I realize we can not always get along with our coaches. For my part, it’s been three years since I try to please them. It was never enough. I never felt that my game was appreciated. Everybody makes mistakes. I am able to accept criticism. It makes me stronger. I made mistakes, but in press briefings after games, it often came back to mine. I was the scapegoat. In this context, it took me a change of air. Mentally, I was no longer there.“Joly does not know where he will be traded yet, but his goal will be clear in the second half of the season.“I want to make everyone lie. Everything I did last year does not mean anything anymore. People are questioning me because my coach and my GM have said bad things about me. I play for a contract in the NHL and what they said did not help me. After Christmas, I will do everything to know the best half-season of my career. I will bring 100% to the team that will appreciate the type of player that I am. I have always produced points by visualizing opportunities and being defensively responsible.“
Hopefully, Joly is right in betting on himself. The forward has fallen flat after a great season last year, and based on the comments and general tone around QMJHL Twitter, the reason for him struggling may not 100% be related to him. Perhaps a fresh start can push him back into contract discussion.
