When it comes to Mark Giordano, the Calgary Flames had good news and bad news on Thursday morning. The bad news is he’s out for a little bit, placed on the injury reserve with a hamstring injury. The good news is that he’s only out week to week. The club has recalled defender Brandon Davidson from the Stockton Heat to take Giordano’s roster spot.
Per GM Treliving, Mark Giordano is on IR with a lower body injury. No timeline on a return, but no surgery required.
Says it’s a much better outcome than initially feared. Says they’ll have a better idea in a week. #Flames

“We’ve got good news. We dodged a bullet” Treliving… Giordano will be out at least a week and he officially week to week. #Flames

Giordano left Tuesday’s game late in the second period after doing the splits and falling awkwardly after making a shot. Everyone likely had flashbacks to his bicep tear in the waning minutes of a game prior to the 2015 trade deadline that cost him the remainder of the season and, let’s face it, probably a Norris Trophy win. Luckily it appears that the injury isn’t cataclysmic in nature, a lucky break considering Giordano’s the team’s best defender, most used player, most consistent player, and their oldest player at 36 years of age.
The 28-year-old Davidson rejoins the Flames after playing three perfectly fine games on the blueline earlier this season. He’s been the leading offensive force for the Heat blueline this season with 20 points in 34 games. He’ll likely start his tenure as the seventh defender as the Flames see what Oliver Kylington can do on the third pairing with Michael Stone, but Davidson provides some nice veteran insurance in case the Flames want to get some different energy into their lineup.
