@Jacob Markstrom has completely shut down the Detroit Red Wings this season.
The 31-year-old goaltender picked up his ninth shutout of 2021–22 in Saturday’s game against the Red Wings, stopping all 19 shots he faced (including 14 in the third period) to help the Calgary Flames win 3–0.
Markstrom previously recorded a 33-save shutout at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit back on Oct. 21, 2021. That clean sheet was Markstrom’s first of the season; at this point, he’s more than doubled his career total with nine shutouts on the year.
Prior to the 2021–22 season, Markstrom had managed just eight shutouts in his entire career with the Flames, Vancouver Canucks, and Florida Panthers. He established his previous career-high in that category with three shutouts in 43 games with the Flames in 2020–21.
Markstrom continues to inch closer to Miikka Kiprusoff’s single-season franchise record of 10 shutouts, established during his Vezina Trophy-winning 2005–06 campaign.
#Flames blank Detroit 3-0. Jacob Markstrom has his ninth shutout to move him to within one of Miikka Kiprusoff’s single season franchise record.
Kiprusoff – 10, 2005-06
Markstrom – 9, 2021-22
It’s also Calgary’s 11th team shutout to tie the franchise record set in 2003-04.

Markstrom has now recorded the following shutouts in 2021–22:
- Oct. 21 @ Detroit (33 saves)
- Oct. 28 @ Pittsburgh (45 saves)
- Oct. 30 vs. Philadelphia (20 saves)
- Nov. 6 vs. NY Rangers (22 saves)
- Nov. 18 @ Buffalo (27 saves)
- Jan. 26 @ Columbus (23 saves)
- Jan. 29 vs. Vancouver (15 saves)
- Feb. 9 vs. Vegas (28 saves)
- Mar. 12 vs. Detroit (19 saves)
The Flames surrendered just five shots on goal through the first 40 minutes of Saturday’s game, but the Red Wings made a strong push early in the third period and tested Markstrom six times by the five-minute mark.
Markstrom made two more saves in the final minute of regulation time — including one on @Sam Gagner with just a second to go — to preserve his shutout bid. With the victory, Markstrom improved to 28–11–6 on the season with nine shutouts and a .928 save percentage.
Since 1997–98, NHL goaltenders have posted nine or more shutouts in a single season 31 times.
With his ninth shutout of the 2021–22 season, #Flames G Jacob Markstrom has joined that group. (The 10-shutout club is far more exclusive — that's happened just 14 times since 1997–98.)

@Elias Lindholm, @Tyler Toffoli, and @Blake Coleman scored for the Flames on Sunday. They’ll return to action in Denver on Sunday for a heavyweight tilt against the Western Conference-leading Colorado Avalanche.
