Markstrom sets Flames record for highest save percentage in a playoff series

While he may have been slightly overshadowed by Jake Oettinger’s performance at the other end of the ice, Calgary Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom was outstanding in the first round of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Markstrom, 32, posted a sparkling .943 save percentage in the seven-game series against Dallas, breaking Miikka Kiprusoff’s franchise record for the highest save percentage in a single playoff series.

Oettinger, 23, went 3–4 with an astounding .954 save percentage for Dallas. It took the Flames 67 shots on goal to finally win Game 7 in overtime; Markstrom picked up the win in the deciding game after making 26 saves on 28 Dallas shots.

Markstrom also recorded an assist in Game 7, kickstarting the play that led to Matthew Tkachuk’s game-tying goal midway through the second period. Johnny Gaudreau and Markstrom picked up the assists on Tkachuk’s first goal of the series.

While Markstrom made a key save to deny Jacob Peterson on a breakaway late in the third period of Game 7, his finest save of the series came in the Flames’ 4–2 loss to Dallas in Game 6.

With the Flames trailing by one goal in the third period, Markstrom somehow managed to deny Stars forward Joe Pavelski with his left pad while sitting at the opposite side of his crease.

Markstrom allowed just 11 goals on 192 shots in the entire series against Dallas. He recorded a shutout in the Flames’ 1–0 victory over the Stars in Game 1.

Barring something entirely unforeseen, Markstrom will be between the pipes when the Flames take on the Edmonton Oilers in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal playoff series on Wednesday.
