3 Calgary Flames players in top four on The Fourth Period’s trade watch list

6 months agoWe’re just over two months away from the 2024 National Hockey League trade deadline on March 8. And, as you might imagine, the Calgary Flames are a team that’s getting a lot of attention due to their many high-profile pending unrestricted free agents.
Three current Flames appear high on The Fourth Period’s trade watch list: Elias Lindholm, Chris Tanev and Noah Hanifin.
The watch list showcases 25 potential trade chips around the league. Lindholm was listed at 1, Hanifin at 2 and Tanev at 4. All three are pending UFAs. Lindholm has a $4.85 million cap hit, Hanifin $4.95 million, and Tanev $4.5 million. If you factor in the potential for the Flames to retain up to half of each of their cap hits, there’s the potential for plenty of contenders to vie for their services before the trade deadline.
Here’s the scuttlebutt on Lindholm:
Unless Lindholm changes his contract demands or the Flames decide to accept a $9M+ AAV on a long-term deal, an extension is unlikely and Calgary GM Craig Conroy will try to maximize a return for the top forward in the trade market.
Hanifin’s breakdown unfolded like so:
Hanifin held off signing an eight-year extension with Calgary at the start of the season worth a reported $7.5M per season. Teams know what he wants long-term, which might not help trade negotiations from Calgary’s perspective, but if the Flames can’t convince him to stay, either, they’ll look to move him.
And here’s what they had to say about Tanev:
Tanev can become a UFA this summer and is another player the Flames may have to move instead of risk losing for nothing in July. There has already been plenty of interest and that will increase in the weeks leading up to the deadline.
