@Andrew Mangiapane just keeps scoring goals.
The 25-year-old forward scored his team-leading 29th goal of the 2021–22 season — and the second shorthanded goal of his career — to give his Calgary Flames a 3–1 lead over the Montreal Canadiens late in the second period of Thursday’s game.
The Flames were in the midst of killing a @Brad Richardson high-sticking minor when goaltender @Jacob Markstrom corralled the puck behind his own net and fired it out into the neutral zone.
The puck ricocheted off @Nick Suzuki and @Tyler Toffoli before finding its way onto Mangiapane’s stick. “Eat Bread” carried the puck down the right side, speeding past Canadiens forward @Ryan Poehling before lifting a backhand shot over @Andrew Hammond’s shoulder.
Toffoli and Markstrom received credit for assists on Mangiapane’s goal, which came at the 15:40 mark of the middle period. Markstrom now has two assists in 43 games during the 2021–22 season.
The Flames lead the Canadiens by a 3–2 score after 40 minutes of play in Thursday’s game. @Blake Coleman and @Johnny Gaudreau have also tallied for Calgary; @Jeff Petry and @Nick Suzuki have the goals for Montreal.
In addition to his assist, Markstrom has made 21 saves on 23 shots through the first two periods. Despite trailing, Montreal is currently outshooting Calgary 23–16.
