Friends, welcome to the final day for trades during the 2023-24 National Hockey League season. Thanks for joining us at FlamesNation for our coverage of the final day of trading, and for following along on the site for this live blog that we’ll update throughout the day.
9:00 a.m. MT update: It’s been a busy first 10 months on the job for Calgary Flames general manager Craig Conroy. Since getting hired, he’s signed Mikael Backlund to a two-year contract extension and named the Swede the club’s captain. He’s also helped navigate Oliver Kylington’s continued absence and subsequent return to the Flames’ lineup.
Oh, and he’s made five major trades – sending pending unrestricted free agent Tyler Toffoli to New Jersey, Nikita Zadorov and Elias Lindholm to Vancouver, Chris Tanev to Dallas and Noah Hanifin to Dallas. He also made a minor-league swap, acquiring centre Riley Damiani from Dallas.
As we head into the final few hours before the 1 p.m. MT deadline, what else do the Flames have up their sleeves?
As the day begins, we’re expecting at the very least some paper transactions that will keep a few players eligible for the AHL playoffs as potential reinforcements for the Calgary Wranglers. We’ll also get some waiver news on defender Jordan Oesterle just after noon MT.
Beyond that? There’s been on and off chatter regarding the New Jersey Devils and Jacob Markstrom for a few weeks, but often pre-deadline noise doesn’t manifest into anything substantial. And the Flames’ moves to this point have been driven by the looming trade deadline acting as a time pressure to get deals done with their pending UFAs. Without a similar trigger on the Markstrom front, it feels like something that gets resolved further down the line (if at all).
And our pal Frank Seravalli has connected the Flames with Nashville’s Tyson Barrie.
But that’s the fun of the trade deadline: it has a way of surprising us sometimes.
10:00 a.m. MT update: So far it’s been quiet for the Flames.
During the past hour, Postmedia’s Wes Gilbertson reported on social media that Flames forwards A.J. Greer and Connor Zary (both currently on the injury reserve) were skating at the ‘Dome.
I also jumped on Sports 1440 with the Kevin Karius Show to tee up the deadline:
11:00 a.m. MT update: Our colleagues who are travelling with the team, TSN’s Salim Valji and Sportsnet’s Eric Francis, have provided updates from Calgary’s practice in Fort Lauderdale.
Nobody was missing from practice – Jacob Markstrom was there – and newcomer Daniil Miromanov joined the team.
Via Valji, projected lines:
Mangiapane – Backlund – Coleman
Pelletier – Kadri – Kuzmenko
Huberdeau – Sharangovich – Coronato
Hunt – Rooney – Duehr
Weegar – Andersson
Kylington – Miromanov
Hanley – Pachal

12:00 p.m. MT update: Calgary Flames blueliner Jordan Oesterle is among the players that cleared waivers at noon. Among those claimed, per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman: Tobias Bjornfot (by Florida from Vegas), Boris Katchouk (by Ottawa from Chicago) and William Lagesson (by Anaheim from Toronto).
One hour to go until the deadline!
12:30 p.m. MT update: According to the AHL transactions page, the Flames have assigned Jordan Oesterle to the Calgary Wranglers.
1:00 p.m. MT update: Just before the deadline, news broke that Vegas is acquiring Tomas Hertl. If it sends Vegas’ 2025 first-rounder the other way, then the Flames’ first-rounder from the Noah Hanifin deal becomes a 2026 first-rounder without conditions attached.
The deadline has hit. We’ll see what trickles in.
We’re not expecting anything major for the Flames given how they’ve made their biggest moves already.
1:15 p.m. MT update: Vegas’ 2025 first-rounder is part of the package headed to San Jose for Tomas Hertl.
The Flames will receive Vegas’ 2026 first-rounder as part of the Noah Hanifin trade.
1:30 p.m. MT update:
2:30 p.m. MT update:
To summarize what ended up being a fairly busy day for the Flames:
  • They’ve assigned D Jordan Oesterle to the Calgary Wranglers (AHL) after clearing waivers.
  • They’ve assigned F Jakob Pelletier & F Matt Coronato to the Wranglers to keep them eligible to play in the AHL, then recalled them from the AHL after the deadline.
  • They’ve signed Kevin Rooney to a one-year extension for the 2024-25 season.
  • They’ve acquired D Nikita Okhotiuk from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a 2024 fifth-round pick.
