The Calgary Flames became just the third National Hockey League team to score six goals in a period this season during the middle frame of their contest against the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday.
@Dillon Dube led the way with a pair of goals during the frantic second period, which saw the Flames outshoot the Coyotes 14–5. @Andrew Mangiapane, @Matthew Tkachuk, @Blake Coleman, and @Elias Lindholm also scored for Calgary in the middle 20 minutes.
The Coyotes pulled starting goaltender @Harri Sateri after Dube scored Calgary’s fourth goal just 3:11 into the second period. Sateri stopped all 15 Flames shots he faced in the opening frame but gave up four goals just 2:33 apart at the beginning of the second.
Dube got the party started 38 seconds into the period, beating Sateri with a low wrister to tie the game at 1–1 (@Nick Ritchie opened the scoring for the Coyotes early in the first). Mangiapane gave Calgary its first lead just 38 seconds later, with Tkachuk and Dube adding two more goals less than a minute apart to end Sateri’s night.
After @Karel Vejmelka replaced Sateri between the pipes, the Flames went without a goal for a little while but finally made it 5–1 at the 15:36 mark of the period when Coleman buried a @Mikael Backlund feed for his 15th goal of the season. Three minutes later, Lindholm notched his 39th of the year from the top of Vejmelka’s crease.
The Flames joined the Boston Bruins and the Pittsburgh Penguins as the only NHL teams to score six goals in a period this season. The Penguins achieved that feat against the San Jose Sharks on Jan. 2; the Bruins did so against the New Jersey Devils on March 31.
Six-goal periods have not been particularly common for the Flames over the last two decades. After posting 15 six-goal periods between the franchise’s inception in 1972 and the turn of the 21st century, the Flames have only hit that mark twice since 2000.
With Sateri now back in goal, the Flames currently lead the Coyotes 7–1 early in the third period. @Johnny Gaudreau added his 35th goal of the season to give Calgary a six-goal advantage.
