Tuesday was an off day for the Calgary Flames, and they made a roster move. Forward Cole Schwindt was assigned to the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers.
Schwindt was called up by the Flames back on Feb. 4 – last Sunday – at the conclusion of the NHL’s All-Star break. Schwindt ended up being the 13th forward as the Flames played four road games, with the fourth line of Jakob Pelletier, Kevin Rooney and Walker Duehr finding a nice rhythm, so he never got a chance to rotate in.
Schwindt’s last game, at any level, was with the Wranglers back on Feb. 3. With the Flames off until Thursday and the Wranglers set to play the Manitoba Moose on Tuesday and Wednesday at home, the logic behind this move is probably “Hey, Schwindt hasn’t played in 10 days, let’s get him some reps.” So, he’s headed to the Wranglers to presumably get some reps. The AHL club is a bit lean right now with the departures of so many players to the NHL, so adding Schwindt should give them a boost, and they have the ability to give the forward some big minutes.
The move drops the Flames’ active roster down to 22 players: two goaltenders, eight defencemen and 12 forwards. They have one open roster spot below the 23-man limit.
