Calgary Flames prospect update: the dog days

By Ryan Pike
1 year agoWe’re into the dog days of the junior and college seasons, friends. In college, seasons are starting to creep towards their end and the conference playoff pictures are becoming clearer. In junior, the seasons look to be sprawling onward a bit given all the COVID rescheduling that happened earlier this season.
Let’s check in on the Calgary Flames’ youngsters this week.
This and that
- G Tyler Parsons remains on the Flames’ season-opening injury reserve.
- He’s not technically a prospect anymore, but D Juuso Valimaki has seven points in 14 AHL games for Stockton.
- F Adam Ruzicka has gotten a full-time residence in Calgary, so it seems likely that he won’t be returning to Stockton anytime soon.
Jack Beck – RW, Ottawa 67’s, OHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (168th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 16 | 13 | 7 | 20 | 11 | 17 | 11 | 33.11 |
Change from last week | 3 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 2 | -1.53 |
Beck’s been back from his injury for a couple weeks and he appears to be getting his swagger back. He had points in two of three games this week, including a two-goal game.
Jake Boltmann – D, University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, NCAA/Big10
Calgary’s third round pick (80th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 32 | 1 | 12 | 13 | 11 | 8 | 6 | 11.09 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.74 |
Notre Dame swept a pair of games with Michigan State, but Boltmann didn’t register any points.
Lucas Ciona – LW, Seattle Thunderbirds, WHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (173rd overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 41 | 15 | 13 | 28 | 18 | 23 | 12 | 16.91 |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 1 | +0.40 |
Ciona isn’t the driver of Seattle’s offense, but he’s a big body who’s generally staying out of the penalty box and picking up goals and assists fairly consistently. He did so again this week, albeit in a pair of quite one-sided Thunderbirds wins.
Matthew Coronato – RW, Harvard University Crimson, NCAA/HE
Calgary’s first round pick (13th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #1-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 25 | 11 | 10 | 21 | 14 | 19 | 13 | 19.29 |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -0.68 |
Harvard is riding a bit of a string of strong play as a team, winning both of their weekend games (and they’ve gone unbeaten in four). Coronato had a goal in Harvard’s win over those stuffed shirts at Princeton.
Walker Duehr – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 33 | 5 | 10 | 15 | 8 | 12 | 7 | 18.11 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -1.17 |
Duehr continues a very nice season as an energy winger in Stockton. He had no points this week.
Lucas Feuk – LW, Västerviks IK, HockeyAllsvenskan / Nybro Vikings IF/Väsby IK, HockeyEttan
Calgary’s fourth round pick (116th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Allsvenskan up to date | 10 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 6.51 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
HockeyEttan up to date | 24 | 9 | 11 | 20 | 15 | 13 | 11 | n/a |
Change from last week | 2 | 2 | 3 | 5 | 5 | 3 | 3 | – |
On one hand, Feuk had two multi-point games and five points this past week so maybe fans should get excited. On the other hand, he did so in Sweden’s far-flung third division, so maybe they shouldn’t be.
Ryan Francis – C, Stockton Heat, AHL / Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL
Calgary’s fifth round pick (143rd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #8-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
AHL up to date | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0.00 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
QMJHL up to date | 24 | 7 | 21 | 28 | 16 | 22 | 13 | 27.17 |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 1 | -0.35 |
Francis missed a game with a minor injury. He also had a multi-point game and a zero point game, which really encapsulates how Francis’ season has gone this year. On a per-game basis, he’s one of Saint John’s more productive players this season.
Glenn Gawdin – C, Stockton Heat, AHL
St. Louis’ fourth round pick (116th overall) in the 2015 NHL Draft; free agent signing; #10-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 38 | 12 | 25 | 37 | 19 | 23 | 14 | 38.80 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 | +0.05 |
Gawdin had a two assist game over the weekend, setting up goals on the power play and at even strength. He remains one of Stockton’s most consistently productive offensive players.
Cole Huckins – LW, Acadie-Bathurst Titan, QMJHL
Calgary’s third round pick (77th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #19-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 28 | 12 | 13 | 25 | 17 | 21 | 13 | 20.79 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Huckins missed Acadie-Bathurst’s games this week due to an illness.
Cole Jordan – D, Moose Jaw Warriors, WHL
Calgary’s fifth round pick (141st overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 20 | 1 | 4 | 5 | 4 | 3 | 3 | 6.19 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.69 |
Jordan played this week, which is great. It’s great because injuries have limited him to less than half of Moose Jaw’s games and so his season has been pretty disjointed.
Rory Kerins – C, Soo Greyhounds, OHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (174th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #18-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 47 | 30 | 49 | 79 | 47 | 64 | 42 | 44.52 |
Change from last week | 3 | 4 | 0 | 4 | 2 | 4 | 2 | -0.63 |
Kerins played three games. He scored four goals, which is actually less than his usual scoring pace. He’s currently second in the OHL in points and one of the top offensive players in that circuit.
Johannes Kinnvall – D, Stockton Heat, AHL
Free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 8 | 0 | 6 | 6 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 29.89 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | +1.42 |
Kinnvall missed one game, but it’s not clear if it’s injury, illness or a healthy scratch. When he got back in, he had an assist, continuing a nice offensive season thus far.
Justin Kirkland – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Nashville’s third round pick (62nd overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft; free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 39 | 14 | 10 | 24 | 13 | 19 | 10 | 24.52 |
Change from last week | 2 | 3 | 1 | 4 | 1 | 3 | 0 | +2.98 |
On one hand, Kirkland is 25 and isn’t really a prospect age-wise anymore. But he’s on a really nice run of offensive weeks recently, albeit somewhat skewed towards power play production. For a guy that wasn’t scoring a ton previously, power play production is better than no production.
Demetrios Koumontzis – LW, Arizona State University Sun Devils, NCAA/Ind.
Calgary’s fourth round pick (108th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 23 | 4 | 7 | 11 | 9 | 8 | 8 | 13.06 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Koumontzis remains out with an injury.
Yan Kuznetsov – D, Stockton Heat, AHL / Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL
Calgary’s second round pick (50th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #15-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
AHL up to date | 12 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0.00 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
QMJHL up to date | 12 | 2 | 5 | 7 | 5 | 5 | 4 | 15.45 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -2.21 |
The Flames sent the defensive-minded Kuznetsov to the Q this season hoping he’d find some offensive swagger. He’s not quite Jeremie Poirier quite yet, but he’s chipping in really consistently. He got a primary even strength assist this week.
Connor Mackey – D, Stockton Heat, AHL
Free agent signing; #7-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 40 | 5 | 21 | 26 | 13 | 17 | 7 | 25.90 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 4 | 4 | 0 | 2 | 0 | +2.83 |
Since Juuso Valimaki arrived in Stockton in early December, Mackey has 22 points in 25 games. He had two multi-point games this week, with four power play assists.
Mitchell Mattson – C, Michigan State University Spartans, NCAA/Big10
Calgary’s fifth round pick (126th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 20 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2.73 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.14 |
Mattson played once, was scratched once, and had zero points.
Ilya Nikolaev – C, Tri-City Storm, USHL
Calgary’s third round pick (88th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 36 | 13 | 28 | 41 | 20 | 26 | 13 | 26.15 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.75 |
Tri-City only played once and Nikolaev uncharacteristically missed the scoresheet, so it’s a rare quiet offensive week for him.
Josh Nodler – C, Michigan State University Spartans, NCAA/Big10
Calgary’s fifth round pick (150th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 32 | 5 | 7 | 12 | 5 | 10 | 5 | 10.24 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.68 |
Nodler was quiet offensively this week, yet again. Michigan State has lost 12 in a row, with their last victory coming in a regional tournament in late December.
Jakob Pelletier – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s first round pick (26th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft; #3-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 40 | 15 | 25 | 40 | 24 | 29 | 17 | 39.85 |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 0 | +1.05 |
Pelletier had a productive week, albeit one skewed a bit towards the power play. A point-per-game season as a pro rookie remains a pretty impressive feat.
Emilio Pettersen – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (167th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft; #11-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 34 | 4 | 8 | 12 | 11 | 8 | 7 | 14.07 |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | +0.37 |
Pettersen scored a goal this week for the Heat.
Matthew Phillips – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (166th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft; #5-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 38 | 19 | 24 | 43 | 23 | 34 | 20 | 45.10 |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 5 | 6 | 3 | 4 | 2 | +4.14 |
He’s one of the older players in Stockton so you would hope that Phillips would drive the bus offensively for them. And he’s doing just that, consistently putting up many, many points – especially at key times in games.
Luke Philp – C, Stockton Heat, AHL
Free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 39 | 15 | 12 | 27 | 14 | 20 | 12 | 27.59 |
Change from last week | 2 | 3 | 0 | 3 | 2 | 3 | 2 | +1.74 |
Philp scored three times this week, including twice at even strength.
Jérémie Poirier – D, Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL
Calgary’s third round pick (72nd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #9-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 38 | 10 | 28 | 38 | 28 | 22 | 16 | 23.29 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 0 | -0.66 |
Sitting third in defensive scoring in the QMJHL, Poirier had two assists this week.
Colton Poolman – D, Stockton Heat, AHL
Free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 35 | 0 | 6 | 6 | 5 | 1 | 1 | 6.83 7.25 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.42 |
Poolman didn’t register a point this week.
Martin Pospisil – C, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s fourth round pick (105th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft; #16-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 30 | 6 | 9 | 15 | 9 | 13 | 8 | 19.93 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.68 |
Pospisil didn’t register a point this week, though he missed Stockton’s second game due to injury.
Ilya Solovyov – D, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s seventh round pick (205th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #20-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 33 | 3 | 3 | 6 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 7.25 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.46 |
Solovyov didn’t register a point this week.
William Strömgren – LW, Rögle BK, J20 Nationell/CHL/SHL / IF Björklöven, HockeyAllsvenskan
Calgary’s second round pick (45th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #13-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
SHL up to date | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0.00 |

Change from last week | 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | +0.50 |
CHL up to date | 2 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 1 | n/a |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Strömgren was busy this week, playing twice for a shorthanded pro side and then rejoining his regular junior group and having a two point game.
Eetu Tuulola – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (156th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 36 | 8 | 6 | 14 | 9 | 11 | 7 | 15.50 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | +0.26 |
Tuulola had one assist in two games this week. His offensive output has been modest, but consistent, this season.
Cameron Whynot – D, Halifax Mooseheads, QMJHL
Calgary’s third round pick (89th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 30 | 3 | 12 | 15 | 7 | 9 | 4 | 11.64 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.41 |
Whynot was injured in Friday’s game and missed the remainder of the week for Halifax.
Connor Zary – C, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s first round pick (24th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #2-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 3 | 2 | +3.10 |
Zary had a big offensive week with three points. He’s had a tough season, with injuries here and there really slowing his momentum, so hopefully this is a sign of positive things ahead for him.
Dmitry Zavgorodniy – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL / HC Sochi, KHL
Calgary’s seventh round pick (198th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

The KHL season for Sochi has been completed, as they haven’t qualified for the playoffs. It’s yet to be seen what’s happening with Zavgorodniy, but most likely he’ll be returning to Stockton.
