The Calgary Flames have made their seventh pick of the 2024 NHL Draft. At 106th overall, the Flames have chosen winger Trevor Hoskin from the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Cobourg Cougars.
A product of Belleville, Ontario, Hoskin is a right shot winger listed at 6’1″ and 172 pounds. He’s a May 2004 birthday, meaning he’s being selected in his third year of draft eligibility. The 2023-24 campaign was his third in the OJHL, and he erupted offensively, posting 42 goals and 100 points over 52 games. He was named the OJHL’s top forward and most valuable player for his efforts, and he helped Canada’s entry at the World Junior-A Championships capture a silver medal.
Hoskin was not listed in the NHL Central Scouting Service’s final rankings or in Elite Prospects’ draft guide. The Hockey News’ Ryan Kennedy had him ranked 120th overall on his final list.
It’s naturally to be a bit skeptical of a double-overage pick, but Hoskin showed some steady offensive progression during his three years in the OJHL. In 2021-22 he had 11 goals and 29 points. In 2022-23 he posted 16 goals and 61 points. And as mentioned, he had his offensive leap last season. If nothing else, he’s showing improvement, and players that can progress at score at any level are going to get attention from NHL clubs.
Hoskin is committed to Niagara University for the 2024-25 season. He’s likely a bit of a longer-term project based on his trajectory thus far, but you can see the offensive output and his progression and wrap your head around why the Flames think he would be worth picking at this juncture in the draft.
