Calgary Wranglers sign Josh Brook to one-year AHL contract

Yesterday, we learned the Calgary Flames have invited right-handed defenceman Josh Brook to their training camp this fall.

Today, the Calgary Wranglers announced they have signed Brook to an American Hockey League contract for the 2022–23 season.

Those two things aren’t mutually exclusive: Brook will still attend Flames camp in September with the goal of trying to earn an NHL deal for the upcoming season. If he doesn’t make the team, he’ll be able to report to the Wranglers.

Brook, 23, split the 2021–22 season between the AHL’s Laval Rocket and the ECHL’s Trois-Rivières Lions. The Montreal Canadiens originally selected Brook in the second round (No. 56 overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft.

In 106 career AHL games with the Rocket, Brook has scored six goals and 29 points. The 6’1″, 195-pound defender was a standout with the WHL’s Moose Jaw Warriors before turning pro with Laval at the end of the 2018–19 season.

Brook joins a crowded Wranglers defensive group that also figures to include Dennis Gilbert, Nicolas Meloche, Jérémie Poirier, Yan Kuznetsov, Nick DeSimone, Colton Poolman, Ilya Solovyov, Rhett Rhinehart, and Simon Lavigne.

Rhinehart, Lavigne, and Brook are the only members of that group signed to AHL-only contracts, although they could be converted to NHL deals at any time.

The Calgary Wranglers will make their debut at home against the Coachella Valley Firebirds on October 16, 2022.
