Flames Game Day 49: Chasing history against the Jets (2pm MT, SN West)

2 years agoIt’s a holiday Monday, and the Calgary Flames (29-13-6, 64 points) are chasing a slice of history when they host the Winnipeg Jets (22-19-8, 52 points). The Flames are the hottest hand in hockey right now and have won nine in a row. They can tie a franchise record with another victory this afternoon against the Jets. Can the home side keep rolling, or will the Jets play spoiler on Family Day?

There’s no morning skate today because of the early start so we’ll see what we get at warm-ups. @Jacob Markstrom is expected to start for the Flames, backed up by @Daniel Vladar. Based on Sunday’s practice, the extras appear to be @Brett Ritchie, @Michael Stone and @Brad Richardson.
The Flames have been rolling of late. They’re winning games in different ways, but keep an eye on their defensive structure and breakouts in this one. They were a bit leaky against Seattle and they probably gave up too many odd-man rushes and strong scoring chances off turnovers for their coach’s liking. If they want to extend their winning streak to 10, they’ll need to keep paying attention to the details of their game.

Since the beginning of February, here’s how the Jets have fared: loss, win, overtime loss, win, loss, win, win, loss. As you can see, they’re more or less in the win-one, lose-one muck lately. They open action seven points behind Los Angeles for the final wildcard playoff spot in the West, and they really don’t want that number to get much larger than it is. It’s not desperation time in the ‘Peg yet, but it’s getting close.
