With injuries to Michaels Stone and Frolik, the Flames have recalled Oliver Kylington and Ryan Lomberg from the Stockton Heat.
Kylington is currently Stockton’s best player, tied for the lead in team scoring. He’s picked up seven goals and seven assists in 18 games from the blueline, nine points up on the next closest defenceman. He’s been a long time coming, having been in the Flames’ pro system since he was drafted in the second round of the 2015 draft. His only previous NHL experience was Game 82 of the 2015-16 season.
Lomberg has been a reliable energy guy and penalty killer for the Heat. He currently has two goals and four assists in 18 games, a few of those points coming shorthanded. He played in seven games last year filing in for injuries, his most notable moments coming from fighting guys who were much bigger than he was.
Of the two, Kylington is certainly the more intriguing player. Given that they recalled Kylington and not anyone else, it seems to suggest that he will see ice time sometime in the near future. While Stone is listed on the IR as day-to-day, who knows how long he’ll be out with a condition like blood clots. Perhaps Kylington’s recall indicates a long time.
Lomberg is likely around as an extra body until Frolik comes back from injury. I don’t think he’ll get a game in, but it depends on how long Frolik is out.
With the Flames playing at 4 p.m., it’s unlikely the two make their season debuts tonight, however.
