A decent night against a good foe in their own building, although the Flames chased all game and didn’t manage to really pull ahead in terms of scoring chances or possession, so the even chance count should be viewed with some suspicsion. The Hawks were sloppy in their own end of the ice, leading to a number of decent chances for the Flames, but controlled play whenever they got the puck over Calgary’s blueline.
The Flames first line ended up -3 by traditional plus/minus, but were pretty good in terms of scoring chance differential. Their numbers are plumped a bit by a single sequence in which Backlund managed three successive shots on net in the first period, but at least they managed to generate a lot at ES for a change. Also, I thought Backlund was probably the best player on the line.
