Flames sign Dmitry Zavgorodniy to an entry-level contract

With the regular season almost wrapped up, the Flames are getting a head start on their offseason business. The club announced this afternoon that they have signed 2018 seventh round pick Dmitry Zavgorodniy to a three-year entry-level contract.

The deal is a standard entry-level contract at three years and $925K AAV, according to CapFriendly. Because he is still 18, the contract won’t start running until 2020-21, unless he manages to squeeze in 10 NHL games before the start of that season. As he is not 20 yet, he is not eligible to play in the AHL next season, and will either be back in the QMJHL or in the NHL.

The Russian seventh round pick has been a fast riser on the Flames’ prospect depth chart. The 5’9 right-shooting left winger has had a great sophomore season with the Rimouski Oceanic, picking up 28 goals and 36 assists in 67 games for the QMJHL powerhouse, finishing fourth on the team. Zavgorodniy has also had a great postseason thus far, with the 18-year-old picking up four goals and an assist in the Oceanic’s four-game sweep of Chicoutimi.

Zavgorodniy is the first 2018 draft class member to be signed, and the second Flames ELC addition, with Luke Philp being the first.
