The Calgary Flames battle the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night in the third of four Battles of Alberta of the 2021-22 regular season. In advance of the game, the club unveiled three new lines at Monday’s morning skate.
The first line of @Johnny Gaudreau, @Elias Lindholm and @Matthew Tkachuk is untouched. It’s a great line and doesn’t need any adjustments.
The new second line features @Blake Coleman, @Mikael Backlund and @Trevor Lewis. The trio has spent 16:49 together at five-on-five this season (all time-on-ice stats here are via Natural Stat Trick). Backlund and Coleman have been together for much of the season, though, with 504:34 together. (The coaching staff appears to really like forward pairings.)
The new third line features @Andrew Mangiapane, rookie @Adam Ruzicka (back from the press box) and @Tyler Toffoli. This is a brand-new line: these three haven’t played together at all this season, and none of the constituent pairings have played much together either. It’s a big opportunity for Ruzicka, who to this point has primarily played with some combination of Brett Ritchie, Brad Richardson, Milan Lucic and Trevor Lewis.
The new fourth line features @Milan Lucic, @Sean Monahan and @Dillon Dube. These three have played 82:28 together this season, which isn’t nothing but also isn’t a ton. But Lucic and Monahan have been together with a different third linemate for 170:00, Dube and Monahan with somebody else for 179:18, and Dube and Lucic have played together off and on since both have been with the club.
Which of the new line combinations do you think is the best? Which makes you nervous?
