The 2024 NHL Draft has been completed! The Calgary Flames made 10 selections overall, including two in the first round – Zayne Parekh at ninth overall and Matvei Gridin at 28th overall.
The Flames have added draft choices for the next two upcoming drafts, but some of the picks have complicated conditions attached. As we look to the future, we thought we’d attempt to entangle the web a bit.
Let’s dive in!

Three trades with unresolved conditions attached

July 22, 2022: The Flames traded Matthew Tkachuk to Florida in exchange for Jonathan Huberdeau, Cole Schwindt, MacKenzie Weegar and Florida’s 2025 first-round pick
If Florida’s 2025 pick is top 10, Calgary receives Florida’s 2026 pick instead.
August 18, 2022: The Flames traded Sean Monahan and a 2025 first-round pick to Montreal in exchange for future considerations
If Calgary receives Florida’s 2025 pick (because it wasn’t in the top 10):
-If Calgary’s pick isn’t top 10, Montreal receives the earlier of the Calgary/Florida picks
-If Calgary’s pick is top 10, Montreal receives Florida’s pick
If Calgary does not receive Florida’s 2025 pick (because it was in the top 10):
-If Calgary’s pick is not first overall, Montreal receives Calgary’s pick
-If Calgary’s pick is first overall, Montreal’s conditional pick shifts to 2026 AND they receive Calgary’s 2025 third-rounder
June 19, 2024: The Flames traded Jacob Markstrom (31.25% retained) to New Jersey in exchange for Kevin Bahl and New Jersey’s 2025 first-round pick
If New Jersey’s 2025 pick is top 10, Calgary receives New Jersey’s 2026 pick instead.
