What a game!
After 60 minutes of back-and-forth hockey between Calgary Flames and Colorado Avalanche resulted in a 3–3 tie, Flames winger @Johnny Gaudreau put his team on top with a highlight-reel breakaway goal in overtime.
Gaudreau broke in on goaltender @Pavel Francouz after taking an incredible bank pass from @Elias Lindholm behind the Avalanche defence. With @Nathan MacKinnon in hot pursuit, Gaudreau managed to beat Francouz over his glove to seal a 4–3 Flames victory.
Saturday’s game was an outstanding display of hockey between two evenly-matched teams. The Flames narrowly outshot the Avalanche by a 37–36 margin through the 60:37 of total game time; according to Natural Stat Trick, the Flames controlled 52.37 percent of the five-on-five expected goals in the contest. Flames goaltender Dan Vladar made 33 saves in the win.
@Elias Lindholm scored twice for the Flames in the game, with @Erik Gudbranson also chipping in with his fifth goal of the season (a new career-high mark for the defensive defender).
With his winner, Gaudreau tied teammate @Sean Monahan for the most overtime goals in franchise history and also surpassed Gary Suter for fifth in career scoring with the Flames (with 566 points).
With the win, the Flames improved to 33–14–7 on the season; the Avs fell to 40–11–5. Calgary will return to action on Mar. 7 to welcome the 30–22–4 Edmonton Oilers to the Scotiabank Saddledome.
