Calgary Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau became the team’s third player to reach the 40-goal plateau this season during the second period of Thursday’s game against the Minnesota Wild.
Gaudreau, 28, took a perfect feed from linemate @Matthew Tkachuk before beating Wild goaltender (and former Flames teammate) @Cam Talbot to put the Flames up 1–0 at the 2:59 mark of the middle frame.
@Nikita Zadorov also picked up a helper on Gaudreau’s 40th goal of the season.
Gaudreau, Tkachuk, and @Elias Lindholm have all scored at least 40 goals this season. The Flames have now had three or more players score 40+ goals three times in franchise history:
  • 1987–88: Joe Nieuwendyk (51), Hakan Loob (50), Mike Bullard (48), Joe Mullen (40)
  • 1993–94: Gary Roberts (41), Theoren Fleury (40), Robert Reichel (40)
  • 2021–22: Elias Lindholm (41), Matthew Tkachuk (41), Johnny Gaudreau (40)
The 2021–22 Flames became the first NHL team since the 2018–19 Tampa Bay Lightning to feature three 40-goal scorers: @Steven Stamkos (45), @Nikita Kucherov (41), and @Brayden Point (41) paced that year’s Bolts team en route to a 62-win season.
The Flames and Wild are currently tied 1–1 after 40 minutes of play in Thursday’s game at the Xcel Energy Center.
