ICYMI: Tkachuk records second hat trick of NHL career Tuesday against Kraken

Tuesday’s game against the Seattle Kraken was one to remember for the Calgary Flames.

@Johnny Gaudreau became the first Flames player to reach the 100-point plateau since 1993. Dan Vladar relieved @Jacob Markstrom in the third period and shut the door as the Flames came back from a 3–1 deficit to win 5–3. @Noah Hanifin became the second Flames defenceman to reach 40 points this season.

@Matthew Tkachuk joined in on the fun with a couple of memorable moments of his own. First, the 24-year-old forward surpassed the 90-point plateau for the first time in his career by scoring the Flames’ first goal of the game.

Then, Tkachuk added two more goals in the third period for his second hat trick in the NHL (and his first since March 10, 2019, when he helped the Flames defeat the Vegas Golden Knights 6–3).

Tkachuk responded for the Flames late in the first period after @Ryan Donato opened the scoring for the Kraken, neatly deflecting a @Noah Hanifin shot past @Chris Driedger to tie the game at one. @Rasmus Andersson also assisted on Tkachuk’s 35th goal of the season.

Gaudreau reached 100 points with the primary assist on Tkachuk’s second goal, which came on a power play early in the third period. After receiving a pass from Gaudreau down low, Tkachuk banked the puck off Kraken defenceman @Adam Larsson before getting it back and firing it past Driedger to make it a 3–2 game.

Tkachuk’s third goal sealed the deal for the Flames late in regulation time. Just minutes after Hanifin put the Flames on top 4–3 at the 14:10 mark of the third period, Tkachuk was able to score his 37th goal of the season on Driedger’s vacated net to make it a 5–3 game.

The Flames have now won five games in a row and sit comfortably atop the NHL’s Pacific Division with just over two weeks to play in the regular season. Tkachuk needs just eight more points in the Flames’ final nine contests to join Gaudreau in the 100-point club for the season.

Tkachuk, Gaudreau, and the rest of the Flames (45–19–9) will return to action on Thursday evening when they host the Vegas Golden Knights (40–29–9) at the Saddledome.
