The Calgary Flames are listening to offers regarding 26-year-old centre Sean Monahan, Bruce Garrioch reported in Tuesday’s Ottawa Sun.
Monahan scored 28 points (10 goals, 18 assists) in 50 games this season before being shut down in mid-May to undergo hip surgery. Flames head coach Darryl Sutter said Monahan’s injury had been affecting him for the final 20 games he played in 2020–21.
Monahan has two years remaining on a deal worth an average of $6.375 million annually. The final three seasons of his contract include a 10-team no-trade clause.
Following a successful junior career with the Ottawa 67’s, Monahan was selected sixth overall by the Flames in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He made the 2013–14 edition of the NHL club out of training camp and scored 22 goals in 75 games as a rookie.
Monahan has scored 30 goals in a season on three separate occasions (2014–15, 2017–18, 2018–19). He has 21 points (10 goals, 11 assists) in 30 playoff games with the Flames.
In 2020–21, Monahan finished outside the Flames’ top-five in team scoring for the first time in his career. He also scored fewer than 20 goals in a season, his first time failing to reach that plateau as an NHLer.
According to data from Evolving-Hockey, Monahan has been worth a total of just 1.0 expected goals above replacement (xGAR) over the past two seasons. In 2018–19, when he scored a career-high 78 points, Monahan provided 12.0 xGAR; in 2017–18, he registered 14.6.
Monahan has 204 goals, 235 assists, and 439 points in 591 games as a Flame.
