You’ve heard of bar-down goals.
How about bar-up?
Calgary Flames winger Johnny Gaudreau broke mostly uncontested into the Edmonton Oilers’ zone late in the first period of Monday’s edition of the Battle of Alberta.
With Oilers defencemen Duncan Keith and Cody Ceci lagging behind in pursuit, Gaudreau unleashed a shot that flew over the glove of goaltender Mikko Koskinen. The puck caromed off the right post before ultimately nestling itself on top of the camera perched inside the net, giving the Flames a 2-0 lead in the dying minutes of the opening 20.
Here’s a reversed view of Gaudreau’s goal, as posted by the Flames’ official Twitter account:
Matthew Tkachuk picked up the lone assist on Gaudreau’s second goal of the pre-season, which came with just 1:15 remaining in the first period.
Gaudreau, 28, is entering the final season of the six-year contract he signed with Calgary back in 2016. He’ll count for $6.75 million against the Flames’ salary cap in 2021–22 before becoming an unrestricted free agent if not signed to a contract extension by July 13, 2022.
The Flames currently lead the Oilers by a 3-2 score after two periods. Tkachuk and Elias Lindholm have the other goals for Calgary; Brendan Perlini and Jesse Puljujärvi are on the board for Edmonton.
Calgary will play its final two pre-season games of 2021 against the Winnipeg Jets, travelling to Manitoba for a game on Oct. 6 before returning to the Scotiabank Saddledome to host the Jets on Oct. 8.
