WATCH: Johnny Gaudreau misses wide on penalty shot in first game back at Saddledome

Columbus Blue Jackets winger Johnny Gaudreau (that still feels weird to type) fired the puck wide on a penalty shot in the first period of his first game back at the Scotiabank Saddledome since leaving the Calgary Flames as an unrestricted free agent.

Gaudreau, 29, picked off a pass by MacKenzie Weegar at the Flames’ offensive blue line and attempted to break in all alone against goaltender Dan Vladar. Before he could do so, however, Flames defenceman Chris Tanev committed a stick infraction against his former teammate.

The result? A point to centre ice by the closest referee: penalty shot.

Gaudreau attempted six penalty shots, converting on two (including one in the playoffs), during his long tenure with the Flames. It’s only fitting that his first penalty shot as a Blue Jacket came in Calgary.

After skating in down the left side of the offensive zone, Gaudreau fired a wrist shot just wide to the right of Vladar’s net. The Calgary goaltender didn’t even have to make a save.

Despite Calgary controlling the shots on goal by a 16–4 margin, they remain tied at zero with the Blue Jackets late in the first period of Monday’s game at the Saddledome. To his credit, Gaudreau has two of the Columbus shots.
