WATCH: MacKenzie Weegar snipes his first goal with the Calgary Flames

Calgary Flames defenceman MacKenzie Weegar finally scored his first goal with his new team midway through the second period of Saturday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

At the end of an extended Flames sequence in the offensive zone, Weegar picked up a pass from defence partner Chris Tanev at the point, crept in, and fired a pin-point wrister past Canucks goaltender Spencer Martin to give Calgary a 3–0 lead.

Weegar, 28, snapped a 39-game goalless drought with his first tally with the “Flaming C” on his chest. The Ottawa product is in his first season with the Flames after being traded by the Florida Panthers alongside Jonathan Huberdeau as part of a package to acquire Matthew Tkachuk back in July.

In early October, the Flames signed Weegar to an eight-year contract extension carrying an AAV of $6.25 million. He’s currently playing in the final year of the last RFA deal he signed with the Panthers in 2020.

Weegar entered Saturday’s game against the Canucks with just seven points (all assists) in his first 36 games with the Flames this season. But the mobile right-handed defenceman helped create Blake Coleman’s shorthanded goal with a slick outlet pass less than five minutes before scoring one of his own to give the Flames a three-goal lead.

The Panthers originally selected Weegar in the seventh round (No. 206 overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft. Through 343 career games over parts of seven regular seasons with the Panthers and Flames, Weegar has amassed 28 goals and 130 points; he also had one goal and five points in 20 career playoff contests with Florida

The Flames currently lead the Canucks by a 3–1 score after two periods of play at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Elias Lindholm (playing in his 700th NHL game) has the other goal for Calgary; Sheldon Dries has the lone tally for the visitors from Vancouver.
