We’re in the quiet part of the year when it comes to hockey, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t news.
There have been numerous re-signings in recent days, while the Edmonton Oilers have remained busy during the off-season.
Let’s dig into all of that in the latest Around the NHL!
Quinton Byfield re-signs with the Kings
On Monday evening, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reported that the Los Angeles Kings re-signed Quinton Byfield to a five-year deal with an annual cap hit of $6.25 million, or $31.25 million in total.
#LAKings sign Quinton Byfield: 5 years x $6.25 million.
Byfield gets $31.25 million in security, plus a mid-term deal to cash in bigger next time around. Intriguing deal for both sides. Eight years would have been quite expensive.

Byfield was selected second overall in the 2020 draft and had a slow start to his career. In 2021-22, he scored five goals and 10 points in 40 games, following that up with three goals and 22 points in 53 games in 2022-23. However, he broke out in 2023-24, scoring a career-best 20 goals and 55 points in 80 games, along with four assists in five post-season games.
At just 21 years old, there’s still a lot of room to grow for the Newmarket native and he’ll be a big part of the Kings’ future.
The Oilers busy off-season continued
Thankfully, the Oilers fell two goals short of capturing their sixth Stanley Cup, but they’ve made a ton of moves this off-season. After signing top six forwards Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson, as well as re-signing important players to their run, the Oilers have also improved their prospect pool.
They moved Ryan McLeod and prospect Tyler Tulio for Matthew Savoie on July 5, and made another move on Monday. The Oilers acquired Roby Järventie and a 2025 fourth-round pick for their 2021 first-round pick, Xavier Bourgault, as well as Jake Chiasson.
Trade:
To #GoSensGo: Xavier Bourgault, Jake Chiasson
To #Oilers: Roby Jarventie, 2025 4th Rd Pick
Bourgault was 22’d overall pick in 2021. Jarventie was 33’d overall pick in 2020.

Bourgault hasn’t lived up to where he was picked, as he scored just eight goals and 20 points in 55 games this past season with the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League. The 21-year-old is trending downward as well, as his career-high is 13 goals and 34 points that he set in 2022-23 in 62 games.
Chiasson was selected in the same draft in the fourth-round. In 2023-24 with the Fort Wayne Komets of the ECHL, the right-winger scored nine goals and 20 points in 68 games and played one game for the Condors.
Järventie was selected a year prior to the two prospects the Senators received, as he was chosen early in the second round. Last season with the Belleville Senators of the AHL, he scored nine goals and 20 points in 22 games. He also played seven games with Ottawa where he picked up an assist, but his season ended in February due to knee surgery.
The Oilers off-season isn’t getting any less busy. They have two restricted free agents, Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg, who still need to be signed. Both those players made a significant impact during the Oilers post-season run, but are at risk of getting an offer sheet.
Moreover, the Oilers may need to clear out some cap to make that happen, so it’s possible they move a player like Cody Ceci, Evander Kane, or even former Calgary Flame Brett Kulak.
Braden Schneider re-signed with the Rangers
There was another re-signing in recent days, as the New York Rangers re-sign defenceman Braden Schneider to a two-year deal with an annual cap hit of $2.2 million.

Schneider was selected 19th overall in the 2020 draft, and became a mainstay in the New York Rangers lineup after a solid post-season where he played 20 playoff games with three assists. This led to him earning a permanent roster spot on the 2022-23 New York Rangers, where he scored five goals and 18 points in 81 games, along with a post-season goal in the Rangers’ Game 7 defeat to the New Jersey Devils.
The 22-year-old right-shot defenceman played a full 82-game season, scoring five goals and 19 points, barely beating out his career-best in the latter category. Moreover, he played 16 post-season games with two assists for the Presidents’ Trophy winning Rangers, before losing in Game 6 against the Florida Panthers.
