The second suspension of the season has been given.
On Friday afternoon, the National Hockey League announced that Los Angeles Kings forward Tanner Jeannot has been suspended for three games for a hit to the head of Vancouver Canucks’ forward Brock Boeser.
The incident happened in the first period of Thursday’s game. Boeser passed the puck away and Jeannot caught him with a blindside hit to the head with the puck long gone. Jeannot received a five-minute major and a match penalty, while Boeser didn’t return to the game.
Tanner Jeannot was issued a match penalty for this hit on Brock Boeser.
In the end, the Canucks got the last laugh, as they won 4-2 to bring their season record to 7-2-3 while the Kings suffered their first regulation defeat on home ice.
Kraken trade for Daniel Sprong
On Friday evening, the Vancouver Canucks sent Daniel Sprong to the Seattle Kraken for future considerations.
General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that F Daniel Sprong has been traded to the Seattle Kraken in exchange for future considerations.
Sprong has been around the league early in his career, as he was drafted in the second round of the 2015 draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. After playing parts of three seasons for the 2016 and 2017 Stanley Cup Champions, he was traded to the Anaheim Ducks in late 2018. He received an opportunity with the Ducks in 2018-19, scoring 14 goals and 19 points in 47 games, along with the four points in 16 games he had with the Penguins.
The Dutchman was traded back to the Metropolitan Division in Feb. 2020, this time to the Washington Capitals, where he spent parts of two seasons. In 2020-21, he scored 13 goals and seven points, but was once again traded midway through the 2021-22 season to the Seattle Kraken.
In 2022-23, Sprong scored a career-high 21 goals and 46 points with the Kraken, helping them make their first postseason in franchise history. Sprong signed with the Detroit Red Wings after the 2022-23 season, scoring 18 goals and 43 points in 76 games.
This past summer, he signed a one-year, $975,000 deal with the Canucks, scoring a goal and three points in nine games before the most recent trade.
Auston Matthews and others were placed on injured reserve
Before Friday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings, the Toronto Maple Leafs placed superstar Auston Matthews on Injured Reserve.
The @MapleLeafs have placed F Auston Matthews on IR (retroactive to November 3). F Connor Dewar has been recalled from LTIR conditioning loan and activated from LTIR.
This move doesn’t seem like a big deal though, as TSN’s Chris Johnston reported that Matthews hadn’t had a setback, and it was a roster management move. On Saturday morning, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that he was skating for the first time since his injury and is eligible to come off the IR next week.
Matthews has scored five goals and 11 points in 13 games this season. Since departing the lineup, the Leafs are 2-0 without their superstar forward, defeating the Boston Bruins 4-0 on Tuesday and the Red Wings 3-1 on Friday.
However, the Leafs’ forward isn’t the only one who was recently placed on Injured Reserve. The Pittsburgh Penguins placed Cody Glass on Injured Reserve while activating Bryan Rust from the IR. Moreover, the Vegas Golden Knights placed defenceman Nic Hague on Injured Reserve on Friday.
The Golden Knights will also be without captain and leading point scorer, Mark Stone, as he’s out day-to-day with a lower-body injury despite playing Wednesday against the Edmonton Oilers.
Also out day-to-day are Red Wings netminder Alex Lyon and Nashville Predators forward Colton Sissons.
