Beyond the Boxscore: Flames push Leafs hard, but fall short

The Calgary Flames threw everything, including the kitchen sink, at the Toronto Maple Leafs but couldn’t catch a bounce – losing 4-2.
CF% – 53.06%|| SCF% – 50.46%|| HDCF% – 73.02%|| xGF% – 54.56%
It’s a Team Game – The Calgary Flames showed up to play, but whether it was fate, bad luck, or both they couldn’t tie the game up. They fell behind early after Jonathan Huberdeau coughed up a breakaway to William Nylander but settled in quickly afterwards and were the better team for about 10 minutes straight in response. The goals though did not come until Nazem Kadri made a great play, down 3-0 at that point, to elevate a shot short side to solve Joseph Woll. Then Kadri made a tremendous pass to Joel Farabee from the boarded hashmarks right to the edge of the crease where Farabee proceeded to deflect it top shelf. Back-to-back amazing Kadri plays, and Calgary had a shot. After that they came really close – about three separate times in the third – but every time it got to the goal line a Leafs player managed to just swat the puck away. It was fun to watch, an enjoyable style of hockey different from what we’ve seen all season. I think if they can keep up that level of creativity they could do a lot better on a night-to-night basis.
Corsi King – Kevin Bahl (75.34 CF%) keeps his level of play at sky high. Credit to his partner as well – Zach Whitecloud (67.50 per cent) has been exceptional since he put on the Flaming C. Together, they are a legitimate, shutdown, top 4 D pair with some mobility. It’s been a real solid combination, and I’m enjoying it. Martin Pospisil (28.29 per cent) did suffer in the middle of the ice tonight. Not as much pop there as the last few games, which is fine, but it was noticeable.
Under Pressure –

Taken By Chance – Yegor Sharangovich (61.69 SCF% // 100 HDCF%) with a 8-0 high danger chance advantage. Who are you and where were you in 2025? He’s been aggressive offensively since the calendar switched – coming off the wall in break-ins, driving the crease, holding on to the puck longer to create some offence – and I love it. The whole team was in a long slump for so long it’s nice to see Morgan Frost (41.76 per cent // 20.56 per cent) get some last game while Joel Farabee (48.90 per cent // 100 per cent) had some offence tonight.
xG Breakdown –

xGF% – Two players to highlight here – Nazem Kadri (73.43 per cent) first because he was the best Flame on the ice in that one. I said he was close to popping off, had to happen soon, and then boom two big plays (both of them very high calibre) and he’s got some offence behind him again. Maybe having the other guy to highlight – Zayne Parekh (37.75 per cent) – around will help him generate more offence. That’s what he’s good at, and he was allowed to be that guy tonight. Still some spots he needs to clean up, but he’s 19 years old and walking around guys entering the neutral zone. He’s putting passes into spaces Flames players didn’t know would be open, if they can get synced up with what he’s doing it will all come together. Special player – excited to watch him the rest of this season.

In The Crease – Hard to blame a goalie for letting a 40-goal scorer get one on a clear breakaway early in the game. He didn’t give up the rush, he didn’t make that mistake. I liked what I saw out of him, the team just can’t give up those opportunities against. Not at the level they did today, anyways. It’s been fun, and Wolf has had to make some high-quality saves, but it’s just always a little too short. He’s too good for that to last forever, as he continues to get better this team will elevate – I just hope they have the right pieces when it happens.
