The Calgary Flames have made their fourth round selection in the 2026 NHL Draft. With the 100th overall pick, the Flames have selected forward Egor Barabanov from the Ontario Hockey League’s Saginaw Spirit.
Barabanov was ranked 43rd among North American skaters by the NHL’s Central Scouting Service. He was ranked 79th by Daily Faceoff and he was ranked 97th by Elite Prospects. A May 2006 birthday, this was Barabanov’s third time eligible for selection in the draft. Back in May, The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler singled him out as the top overage prospect in this draft class. He had 91 points in 68 games with the Spirit this season, good for fourth in the OHL. He primarily played as a centre.
A product of St. Petersburg, Russia, Barabanov is a left shot forward listed at 6’0″ and 181 pounds. Despite his Russian birth certificate, he’s been in North America for awhile. He came over as a teenager – Elite Prospects only lists back to 2018, when he was twelve, and he was in North America – and he’s worked his way through New Jersey prep school hockey, parts of two seasons in the United States Hockey League with the Sioux Falls Stampede and Madison Capitals, and he made the transition to the OHL with the Spirit this past season.
He’s committed to the University of Massachusetts in the fall, where he’ll join fellow Flames prospects Max Curran and Tobias Trejbal.
Here’s what Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis wrote about him in his recent profile of re-entry prospects:
Nikita Klepov isn’t the only USHLer-goes-to-Saginaw-and-boosts-his-draft-stock prospect this year. Barabanov had a solid 38 points in games in the U last year before finding himself on a 90-point pace in Saginaw. The 19-year-old was passed over twice before, but he has really come into his own in recent months thanks to increased confidence and a strong work ethic. He’s also not afraid to drop the gloves, either.Barabanov plays with a boatload of skill. He has quick hands and is always scanning for passing lanes, but he knows when he needs to shoot the puck himself, too. Barabanov does a solid job of exploiting open space, and he’s getting better defensively, too. He has always had talent, but the results are finally starting to follow – and it’s hard not to adore the nastiness in his game, either.
