As the 2026 NHL Entry Draft nears, it seems the jury is still out on who the Calgary Flames will take with their two first-round picks.
The latest mock draft this week comes from FloHockey‘s Chris Peters, who predicted the full first round on Friday with Elite Prospects’ Cam Robinson on the Called Up podcast. And while Carson Carels has been a popular choice for Calgary in mock drafts so far, the two picked him at fourth overall to the Chicago Blackhawks. Given that, Robinson went with a wild card pick for Calgary at sixth overall, going for forward Viggo Björck:
“I think Calgary would love to add Carson Carels to the left side of that blue line, complementing (Zayne) Parekh. They don’t have that option in this world, and so I think that that would also impact them going with another righty like a (Keaton) Verhoeff or a Daxon Rudolph or something like that. … I think Craig Conroy’s got the stones to make the big swing here, we’re taking Viggo Björck at number six. This is a player you build around. This is a player you put into your lineup, and you instantly find out. Everybody loves Viggo and there’s a reason for it. Players love Viggo, coaches love Viggo, management loves Viggo, the community loves Viggo. He’s gonna be one these guys that fits in seamlessly into whatever organization he lands in, and he’s going to be the bell of the ball in a hurry. Calgary is going to do well if this is their pick.”
For context, Peters and Robinson picked the top five as follows: #1 F Gavin McKenna (Toronto Maple Leafs), #2 D Chase Reid (San Jose Sharks), #3 F Ivar Stenberg (Vancouver Canucks), #4 D Carson Carels (Chicago Blackhawks), #5 F Caleb Malhotra (New York Rangers). They also made note that if the top three shakes out how they envision it, it would leave centreman Caleb Malhotra as the best prospect available, but the Blackhawks already have adequate centre depth. This could lead Chicago to trade down, which could shake the first round up in a number of ways.
Björck spent last season with Djurgårdens IF in the Swedish Hockey League. In 42 games, he had six goals and nine assists. The 18-year-old also impressed in his IIHF World Juniors debut earlier this year, tallying three goals and six assists in seven games en route to a gold medal. He was previously predicted as Calgary’s sixth overall pick by NHL.com’s Mike G. Morreale in early May.
At 30th overall, Robinson has Calgary taking defenceman Juho Piiparinen. He highlighted Liam Ruck and William Håkansson as two other players he had eyes on for this pick, though they were both taken earlier in the mock (at 27th and 29th, respectively). Piiparinen is a 6-foot-3 blue liner who spent this past season in Finland’s Liiga with Tappara. He also has a wealth of junior international experience under his belt.
