As several members of the Calgary Flames get set to head over to Europe to kick off the 2025 IIHF World Championship next month, one Flames player previously announced as going… won’t be.
Last week, the United States announced the first 18 members of their Worlds roster.
Conspicuous by his absence was Flames forward Matt Coronato, who was announced by the club during exit media day as going to the tournament. A lot of folks wondered “Hey, what gives?
Well, it turns out that Coronato, like a lot of players at the end of a long season, was a little banged up. And so the Flames and Coronato were likely looking into a minor injury that Coronato had been dealing with.
On Monday, the Flames revealed that Coronato wasn’t going to Worlds after all.
It’s a bit disappointing, but Coronato had one heck of a season for the Flames in 2024-25. After splitting 2023-24 between the NHL and AHL, Coronato made the Flames roster out of training camp but lacked a clear role, and once the team got healthy he was demoted to the AHL – a downside of being a young, waiver-exempt player.
But Coronato’s time in the AHL lasted just a week, as he played two games and then was summoned to the big club when Sam Honzek was sent to the Wranglers at the end of October. When Anthony Mantha slumped, Coronato jumped into the top three forward lines and Mantha’s unfortunate season-ending knee injury – combined with Coronato’s effectiveness in his top nine audition – cemented Coronato’s spot in the Flames’ lineup.
In the final season of his entry-level deal, Coronato scored 24 goals and had 47 points. He was among the Flames’ most dangerous offensive weapons, and he was heavily relied-upon in the back half of the season – along with Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau – to score key goals at key times. And the 22-year-old delivered.
While Coronato won’t get a chance to suit up for the Americans at the Worlds, we’re intrigued regarding how he could potentially build on his breakout 2024-25 season.
The 2025 IIHF World Championship runs May 9-25 in Stockholm, Sweden and Herning, Denmark. The Flames are expected to be represented by head coach Ryan Huska (Canada), MacKenzie Weegar (Canada), Zayne Parekh (Canada), Sam Honzek (Slovakia), Dan Vladar (Czechia), Rasmus Andersson and Mikael Backlund (Canada).
