A trio of Calgary Flames prospects played in a Game 7 this past week – it didn’t go well.
This is the Apr. 21–27 edition of the Flames prospect roundup, where we look at how Calgary Flames prospects did this past week, specifically those at the junior and college levels. The American Hockey League prospects have their own article in the Wranglers recaps.
Let’s take a look at the week that was!
Matvei Gridin
Matvei Gridin and the Shawinigan Cataractes haven’t had a good start to their semifinals, as they are down 2-0 in the series against the Rimouski Océanic. Game 1 was a 5-1 loss, with Gridin being held off the scoresheet. In Game 2 on Sunday, the Cataractes were shut out 7-0 to fall into a 2-0 hole.
The good news is that a series isn’t over until you lose at home, and both games were played in Rimouski. Game 3 shifts to Shawinigan on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. MT, with Game 4 coming the following day at the same time. If needed, Game 5 is back in Rimouski on Friday at 5:00 p.m. MT, and Game 6 is on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. MT.
This post-season, the Flames’ 28th overall pick in the 2024 draft has six goals and 14 points in 10 games.
Andrew Basha
Andrew Basha still hasn’t played in the post-season, but his Medicine Hat Tigers are running through the Western Hockey League.
Facing the Lethbridge Hurricanes, they defeated them 5-2 on Friday to take a 1-0 series lead, followed by a 7-2 win to take a 2-0 lead. Up next for the Tigers is Game 3 in Lethbridge on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. MT. Game 4 is the following day in the same place at the same time.
If needed, Game 5 will shift back to Medicine Hat on Friday at 7:00 p.m. MT. Game 6 will be Sunday at 7:00 p.m. MT in Lethbridge on Sunday, again if needed.
Jacob Battaglia
The Kingston Frontenacs played the decisive Game 7 against the Barrie Colts on Tuesday. Heading into the second period, the Frontenacs had a 3-2 lead, but allowed three consecutive goals to make it a 5-3 lead for the Colts. They got one back, but the Colts put it away with an empty net.
Flames prospect Jacob Battalgia didn’t pick up a point in the game. For the post-season, he finished with three goals and 16 points in 11 games, solid, but a drop off from his production in the regular season.
In late March, Battaglia signed his entry-level contract, but since he’ll be 19 next season he won’t be eligible to play with the Calgary Wranglers in the AHL.
Eric Jamieson
Like Battaglia, things didn’t go great for Eric Jamieson and the Everett Silvertips in their Game 7. The Flames prospect picked up an assist on Landon DuPont’s fifth post-season goal to give them a 1-0 lead. The Silvertips had a 2-1 lead early in the third, but the Portland Winterhawks scored three unanswered.
This was Jamieson’s last season of junior hockey, as he’s committed to play for the University of Denver in 2025-26. Jamieson finished with a goal and four points in 13 games, as well as a career-high of 14 goals and 36 points in the regular season.
Étienne Morin
Étienne Morin and the Moncton Wildcats have found success early in the semifinals.
On Thursday, they defeated the Royun-Noranda Huskies 5-3, with the left-shot defenceman being held off the scoresheet. Game 2 was a low-scoring game that the Wildcats won 2-1, with Morin picking up an assist on the game-winning goal. So far this post-season, Morin has a goal and 11 points in 11 games.
The series shifts to the Québec Maritimes Junior Hockey League’s western-most city starting on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. MT. Game 4 comes two days later at the same time, and if needed, Game 5 will shift back to New Brunswick on Friday at 4:00 p.m. MT. The potential Game 6 will be on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. MT back in Rouyn-Noranda.
Axel Hurtig
Continuing the trend of Flames’ prospects losing Game 7, the Calgary Hitmen and Axel Hurtig were unable to defeat the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Wednesday. The Hurricanes opened the scoring early in the first, and the Hitmen fired back. However, the Hurricanes regained the lead about five minutes later and added another one early in the third for the 3-1 win and 4-3 series win.
In his first season in North America, the left-shot defenceman finished with a goal and three points in 11 post-season games. As for the regular season, Hurtig finished with five goals and 16 points in 55 games.
