Ethan Wyttenbach is quickly becoming one of the Calgary Flames’ best prospects.
This is the Jan. 6 – Jan. 13 edition of the Flames prospect round-up, where we look at how Calgary Flames prospects have done every week. Specifically, we’ll look at players playing overseas, in junior hockey, or at the college level, as the American Hockey League prospects will have an article of their own in the Wranglers Recaps.
We’ll take a look at the games which were played last week, what’s next for all the players, and look at the standings.
College
Cole Reschny has rejoined the North Dakota Fighting Hawks after the World Juniors, as they fell 3-2 in overtime and won 5-2, both games coming against Colorado College. Flames’ prospect Cade Littler picked up an assist in the overtime loss, while Reschny had a goal and an assist in their win. So far this season, Reschny has three goals and 20 points in 18 games, while Littler has four goals and 10 points in 20 games. This weekend, they’ll play two games against Eric Jamieson’s Denver in National Collegiate Hockey Conference action.
Denver’s two games over the weekend were both losses, falling 4-1 and 6-2 to Western Michigan. Jamieson, the Flames’ sixth-round pick in 2024, was held off the scoresheet in both games. Through 23 games this season, Jamieson has six goals and 13 points. He and Denver head on the road to play North Dakota, with Friday’s game at 6:00 PM MT, and Saturday’s game at 5:00 PM MT.
The other Flames prospect in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference was Cullen Potter. His Arizona State Sun Devils played two games against Miami (Ohio) this past weekend, falling 2-1 in overtime and winning 1-0. In the OT loss, Potter picked up an assist, but left their win after a nasty hit. It’s unclear for how long Potter is out, or if he’ll even be out, but they’ll have next weekend off, before playing two games against North Dakota the following weekend. Potter has 12 goals and 26 points in 24 games this season.
Luke Misa had a strong week in Big 10 Conference action, as his Penn State Nittany Lions defeated Minnesota 3-0 and 5-2. In the shutout win, Misa scored and picked up an assist, and picked up an additional assist in their 5-2 win. That gives him three goals and seven points for the season, as Penn State hits the road to play Wisconsin, not this coming weekend, but the one after that.
Unsurprisingly, Ethan Wyttenbach had another strong week with Quinnipiac. In their 7-2 win over Union, he scored a goal and picked up two assists, then picked up an assist in their 4-3 win over Rensselaer. The Flames’ fifth-round pick in 2025 has 12 goals and 31 points in ECAC Hockey this season, and will have a chance to add even more points with a game against Colgate on Friday and Cornell on Saturday.

Also in ECAC Hockey action was Harvard’s Aidan Lane. They fell 5-4 to Dartmouth College in an in-conference matchup, then lost 4-1 to Boston University. Lane, the Flames’ sixth-round pick in 2025, was held pointless in both games, giving him five goals and six points in 15 games this season. Harvard takes on St. Lawrence University on Friday, Clarkson University on Saturday, and Union on Monday, all at home, all in-conference match-ups.
That leaves the two Flames prospects in Hockey East: Merrimack’s Trevor Hoskin and Jaden Lipinski’s Maine. Merrimack played one game this week, a 5-2 victory over Holy Cross, with Hoskin being held off the scoresheet. Still, he has four goals and 19 points in 19 games this season. This weekend, Merrimack plays a home-and-home against UMass, hosting them on Friday and heading on the road the following day.
Maine lost both games they played this week against Providence, falling 6-1 and 3-0. Lipinski was held off the scoresheet in both games, giving him three goals and eight points in 21 games this season. Maine will have this weekend off, but return to action the following weekend against UMass Lowell in Hockey East action.
Time to look at the standings! North Dakota sits at the top of the NCHC standings with 29 points, followed by Denver with 24 points. Arizona State sits fifth with 17 points, as eight of the nine teams make the playoffs in a 1-8 format.
At the top of the Big 10 Conference sit Henry Mews and Michigan with 26 points, although Mews remains out of the lineup. Penn State is third in the conference with 19 points in 10 games. All seven teams in the conference make the end-of-season tournament, with the first-placed team earning a bye.
Quinnipiac sits second in the ECHC Hockey standings thanks to an 8-2-0 in-conference record, tied with Princeton with 22 points. Lane’s Harvard sits fifth in the conference with a 5-4-0 record and nine points. All 12 teams in the conference earn a berth to the end-of-season tournament, with the four-best teams earning the bye.
Lastly, Lipinski’s Maine sits fifth in Hockey East’s standings with a 6-7-0 record and 16 points. Merrimack is tied for the second-fewest points, but that’s okay as all 11 teams in the conference earn an end-of-season berth. The five best teams earn a bye.
Junior
Switching gears to junior hockey, the Medicine Hat Tigers are now on an 11-game win streak, and the returning Andrew Basha is only going to help in that regard. Last week, they defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 8-3, then the Lethbridge Hurricanes 7-4. Basha had three assists in their 8-3 win, and a goal and two assists in their 7-4 win to give him two goals and eight points in the four games since returning.

Hunter Laing and the Saskatoon Blades played just one game this past week, falling 3-1 to the Edmonton Oil Kings, with Laing being held pointless. This season, the Flames’ sixth-round pick in 2024 has 17 goals and 35 points in 36 games. The Blades return to action with a match-up against the Brandon Wheat Kings on Wednesday, then a home-and-home against the Swift Current Broncos on Friday and Saturday.
One other Flames prospect playing the Western Hockey League was in action this past week, Axel Hurtig of the Calgary Hitmen. They defeated the Thunderbirds 5-3 on Saturday, followed up by a 5-1 win over the Hurricanes on Sunday. Hurtig, a left-shot defenceman, was held pointless in both games, giving him three goals and eight points in 34 games played this season. The Hitmen host the Tri-City Americans on Wednesday, then hit the road to play the Kelowna Rockets on Friday and the Penticton Vees on Saturday.
Jacob Battaglia played his first full week in a Flint Firebirds’ uniform. They defeated the Sarina Sting 7-4, the Saginaw Spirit 4-2, and the Kingston Frontenacs 4-1. Battaglia scored in his Firebirds debut, then scored an empty-netter against the Frontenacs to give him 16 goals and 29 points in 39 games this season. The Firebirds will head on the road this week, playing the Barrie Colts on Thursday, the Sudbury Wolves on Friday, and the North Bay Battalion on Sunday.

The Green Bay Gamblers played two games against the Fargo Force this past week, winning a game 5-1 then losing a game 5-1. Phillips, the Flames’ third-round pick in 2025, didn’t play in either game due to a suspension, as he has a goal and four points in 21 games this season. They take on the US U18 Development Program team on both Saturday and Sunday.
As for the standings, the Ontario Hockey League’s Firebirds sit at the top of the league with a 29-9-4 record and 62 points, three ahead of the Windsor Spitfires in the Western Conference. It’s a 1-8 format, with eight of the 10 teams making it from each conference.
In the Western Hockey League, it’s also a 1-8 format, with all three Flames’ prospects playing in the Eastern Conference. The Tigers sit first with a 29-6-5 record and 63 points, while the Hitmen are fourth with a 21-10-6 record and 48 points. If the playoffs were to start today, the Blades would have to play on the road, as they sit sixth in the conference with a 21-15-3 record and 45 points.
Lastly, the Gamblers of the United States Hockey League sit tied for first in the Eastern Conference, but have played two more games than the Youngstown Phantoms. Both teams have 51 points, as the Gamblers have a 24-9-3 record.
Overseas
Looking overseas, Theo Stöckselius hasn’t returned to action despite Sweden’s U20 league resuming after the holiday break. (He was slated to return to action on Wednesday, though.) However, Jakob Leander and HV71 U20 did return to action, defeating Rögle BK U20 by a score of 4-2 and Malmö Redhawks U20 by a score of 5-3. Leander scored his second goal of the season in the 5-3 win, giving him two goals and seven points in 24 games this season. HV71 U20’s lone game this week is against Linköping HC U20 on Wednesday.
Yan Matveiko returned to the Red Army’s lineup this weekend, picking up an assist in their 3-2 win over Yegor Yegorov and JHC Spartak-MAX, while being held pointless in their 4-0 win over AKM-Yunior. This season, he has 13 goals and 29 points in 31 games, as Red Army faces HC Kapitan on Saturday.
Yegorov sadly didn’t play in JHC Spartak-MAX’s 3-2 loss to Matveiko and Red Army, but he did appear in two other games. In their 4-3 loss to AKM-Yunior, Yegorov stopped 31 of 35 shots for an .886 save percentage. He rebounded by stopping 22 of 24 shots in a 3-1 loss to Taifun, posting a .917 save percentage in that game. This season, he has a .921 save percentage and 2.92 goals against average in 19 games. This week, JHC Spartak-MAX plays Taifun on Wednesday and JHC Atlant on Saturday.
Lastly, Kirill Zarubin and Milhailov Academy played three games this past week. They fell 5-3 to SKA-1946, lost 4-2 to JHC Dynamo SPB, but avenged that loss with a 4-3 overtime win over JHC Dynamo SPB. Zarubin played in the first two games, stopping 14 of 16 shots in the 5-3 loss (.875 save percentage), then allowed four goals on 24 shots in their 4-2 loss for an .833 save percentage. This season, the Flames’ third round pick in 2024 has a .927 save percentage and 2.14 goals against average in 29 games. On Thursday, Mikhailov Academy plays HC Kapitan, followed by a matchup against AKM-Yunior on Friday.
