There is one thing certain about the Calgary Flames organization – they’ve loved their Russian netminders recently.
In recent times, I’ve looked at how Kirill Zarubin and Arsenii Sergeev have been doing this season. To complete the trilogy, I’ve decided to look at how Yegor Yegorov, the Flames sixth-round pick in the 2023 draft, has done this season as well.
Yegor x2, as I like to call him, started his career in the youth leagues of Russia, before playing 15 games with MHK Dynamo Moskva in Russia’s Junior Hockey League (MHL). That season, which also happened to be his draft year, saw him post a .915 save percentage and 2.29 goals against average in 15 games, with a 9-4-0 record.
After the Flames selected him 176th overall, Yegorov returned to MHK Dynamo Moskva, where he had a .917 save percentage and 2.46 goals against average in 25 games, with a 10-8-3 record.
Heading into the season, Yegorov was an honourable mention in our top Flames prospect rankings. There were some interesting notes from Mike Gould in that article, such as Yegorov’s appearance at development camp suggesting an interest in playing in North America, and that his contract with Dynamo Moskva was set to expire at the end of the 2024-25 season. (It’s unclear if his change in organizations has changed his contractual expiry.)
Before the start of the season, Yegorov was loaned to HC Tambov of the Supreme Hockey League (VHL), which is their version of the American Hockey League. He had four appearances with Tambov, posting an .870 save percentage and 3.38 goals against average with a 1-1 record. In December, he switched KHL organizations, moving from Dynamo Moskva to Spartak Moskva, and was loaned once again to Krylya Sovetov Jr. (the Soviet Wings), where he has a .911 save percentage and 2.90 goals against average in 16 games, with a 6-9-0 record.
Yegor x2 recently had a stint on Spartak’s roster from Jan. 31 until Feb. 17 and dressed once as their backup, but hasn’t made his Kontinental Hockey League as of yet. Still, the fact he’s at least under consideration for professional starts is quite impressive for the 19-year-old netminder.
Time will tell what’s next for Yegorov at the end of the season, whether he comes to North America or remains in Russia is anyone’s guess. There’s still a lot to be excited about though.
