Over the past few seasons, the Calgary Flames have made many, many draft picks. Several of those draft choices have turned into promising young players. A few of them have already pushed their way onto the big club’s roster – such as Zayne Parekh and Matvei Gridin, both 2024 first-round picks – while others are biding their time.
Over at TSN, our old friend Craig Button has compiled his annual top 50 ranking of NHL-drafted prospects. Two Flames prospects appeared on the list. Cole Reschny was ranked 24th and Ethan Wyttenbach was ranked 39th.
A product of Macklin, Saskatchewan, Reschny was a first-round pick by the Flames in 2025, 18th overall, selected with the pick the Flames received from New Jersey in the Jacob Markstrom trade. He spent two seasons with the Western Hockey League’s Victoria Royals, including a 92-point campaign in 2024-25, his draft-eligible season, followed up with a superb showing with Canada’s entry at the Under-18 World Championships.
Reschny moved onto the NCAA’s University of North Dakota. Playing on one of college hockey’s top teams, Reschny has been one of college hockey’s top rookies and one of the top two-way players in his conference. Heading into this weekend, he has 33 points in 32 games, led all NCHC rookies in scoring, and its fifth among all freshman nation-wide in points. He was recently named to the NCHC All-Rookie Team. During the winter break, he was part of Canada’s bronze medal-winning World Junior team.
A product of Roslyn, New York, on Long Island, Wyttenbach was a fifth-round pick by the Flames in 2025, 144th overall. After a few years in local prep league hockey, Wyttenbach made the jump to American major junior in 2024-25 when he suited up for the Sioux Falls Stampede. He quickly adapted and emerged as one of the USHL’s top players, and was the inaugural winner of the league’s Gaudreau Award.
After off-season knee surgery, Wyttenbach and the Flames decided that he should make the jump to the NCAA with Quinnipiac this season rather than spending another year in the USHL. It turned out to be a really prudent decision, as he’s adapted his offensive skills quickly to the NCAA game. As of right now, he’s the NCAA’s leader in points both among freshman and all players. He was named to the ECAC’s All-Rookie and First All-Star Teams, and he’s considered a strong contender for the Hobey Baker Award, the top award in college hockey. Wyttenbach is the lowest-drafted of the 50 players on Button’s rankings.
