Friends, we get it.
The Calgary Flames made some moves to accelerate their rebuild prior to the NHL’s trade deadline. They’re probably not going to make the playoffs. And the attentions of many have shifted from the final stretch of Flames games in the 2025-26 season towards the 2026 NHL Draft.
You see, the Flames may pick pretty high. Perhaps higher than they’ve ever selected before. And that means the Flames could get a really, really impactful young player.
Over at Daily Faceoff, our pal Steven Ellis put together his second mock draft of the year. With the Flames’ first-round pick, second overall, he has the Flames selected Swedish winger Ivar Stenberg. And with Vegas’ pick, 18th overall, he has the Flames selecting college forward (and Russian product) Ilya Morozov.
Let’s delve into both picks and what Ellis had to say about each player.
Ivar Stenberg at 2nd overall
“The Flames would be ecstatic to land Stenberg, even though he has cooled off quite considerably in recent weeks. The fact that Stenberg has played consistently well against men, averaging 16-18 minutes a night, is impressive on its own. Stenberg generates high-quality plays as effectively and consistently as anyone in this draft class, while boasting some of the best vision and hockey sense of any forward. His World Junior performance definitely helped his draft stock, too. There’s still a very solid chance he goes first, but we’ll see if he finishes the year off strong. For what it’s worth, I hope Sweden takes him to the World Championship (he isn’t eligible for the U-18s).”
Stenberg is a 6’0″, 181 pound, left shot winger. He’s a late Sept. 2007 birthday, so he’s one of the older first-time players in this draft class. Players with late birthdays are sometimes penalized by scouting models because they’re more physically mature than other youngsters in their draft class.
Well, Stenberg doesn’t get that criticism because he’s spent the last year and a half (or so) in the Swedish Hockey League, one of the top three or four leagues on the planet, playing against grown-ass men as a teenager. He has 33 points in 42 SHL games with Frolunda, and also helped lead Sweden to a gold medal at the World Juniors.
It’s extremely difficult for a teenager to move the needle in the SHL. But Stenberg has done that. Just imagine him apprenticing on a line with Mikael Backlund for a few seasons.
Ilya Morozov at 18th overall
“Morozov’s numbers have stabilized a bit. But playing 20 minutes a night on an underdog Miami team and putting up 20 points in 36 games? That’s absolutely nothing to sneeze at. Being 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds also helps. Morozov commands attention, and he’s an absolute pain-in-the-rear-end to try to contain. The Flames could use some extra center depth, and Morozov absolutely should be in the conversation here – many scouts liken him to a bigger Wyatt Johnston.”
A Moskva product, Morozov is a 6’3″, 205 pound left shot forward. He came over to North America last season and played with the USHL’s Tri-City Storm, and he moved onto Miami (Ohio) University this season as a freshman. His offensive output hasn’t been tremendous – 20 points over 36 games – but it’s quite respectable for a freshman, quite impressive for someone who hasn’t been in North America for two full years yet, and even more impressive in the context of being on a team that isn’t jam-packed with NHL prospects. (Morozov doesn’t have the supporting cast other collegiate draft prospects have benefited from.)
But when you consider his size, adaptability and the Flames’ growing crop of young Russian players that could help him continue to adapt and develop (like Arsenii Sergeev, Aydar Suniev and Yan Kuznetsov, among others), you can understand the appeal of a player like Morozov.
What do you think of Ellis’ picks for the Flames? Who would you select at 2nd and 18th overall? Let us know in the comments!
