The Calgary Flames have locked up one of the more unique players in their developmental pipeline to an entry-level deal.
On Wednesday morning, the club announced that they’ve signed Calgary Hitmen captain, defenceman Axel Hurtig, to a three year, entry-level deal with a $990,000 average annual value. The contract begins in the 2026-27 season.
A product of Hogas, Sweden, Hurtig is a left shot defenceman listed at 6’4″ and 217 pounds by the Western League’s website. A 2005 birthday, he came up through minor hockey in the Grästorps and Rögle systems, and was selected by the Flames in the seventh round of the 2023 NHL Draft due in part to an impressive performance with Sweden’s national team at the Under-18 World Championships – Sweden captured a silver medal.
After staying with Rögle for his Draft+1 2023-24 season, in part due aid in his injury rehab after off-season shoulder surgery, Hurtig moved to the Calgary Hitmen in 2024-25 as an import. He adjusted really quickly to the smaller North American ice and different playing style, quickly becoming one of the most relied-upon defenders on the Hitmen. He also represented Sweden at the 2025 World Juniors. Hurtig impressed Flames brass in training camp this past fall and returned to the Hitmen for his overage season, being named the club’s captain shortly after the campaign began.
Is Hurtig an offensive dynamo? Hardly. He posted 16 points as a 19-year-old rookie in 2024-25 and 19 points as an overager in 2025-26. But he’s a bit of a throwback: a pure shutdown defender who knows how to use his positioning, lengthy and brute force to keep the front of his net clear and separate puck-carriers from the puck. And considering he’s only been in North America for two years and has been on a Hitmen team with a ton of turn-over on their roster, Hurtig provided a tremendous amount of continuity for that group and was a combined plus-60 over a two year period.
Simply put: in a Flames defensive pipeline that has a lot of smart, mobile puck-movers that maybe lack a bit of size, Hurtig adds a lot of snarl and physicality. We’re fascinated to see how he adapts to the professional game next season.
Like the recent signing of Jonathan Castagna, Hurtig’s deal does not kick in until the fall, so the Flames still have 48 active contracts on the books and two contract slots available for use, if desired. Hurtig remains with the Hitmen in the WHL’s playoffs, where they hold a 3-0 lead over the Brandon Wheat Kings in their first round series.
