With Kris Versteeg missing practice, it seems that someone might be coming up through the pipeline soon. Exciting times.
In case you missed it
- Here’s last week’s update.
- And that’s it!
Rasmus Andersson – D, Stockton Heat, AHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 15 | 2 | 9 | 11 | 5 | 4 | 4 | 28.26 |
Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -0.65 |
A pretty productive week for Andersson. He kept pace for the season by adding a goal and an assist in three games this week.
Austin Carroll – RW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Change from last week | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Not sure why they don’t at least just free him and send him to the ECHL. KC really needs an offensive boost and it’s better than him sitting on the bench.
Dillon Dube – C/LW, Kelowna Rockets, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 22 | 14 | 15 | 29 | 16 | 22 | 13 | 31.35 |
Change from last week | 3 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 2 | 3 | 2 | -1.19 |
If you’re wondering just how good Dube is, here’s Glen Gulutzan, Johnny Gaudreau, and Sean Monahan singing his praises during media availability. I knew he was a later cut than expected, but to hear that he had a very good shot at actually playing in the NHL? That’s quite the endorsement (though I’m skeptical of the praise given that they gave a LW spot to Tanner effing Glass).
Two goals and an assist for Dube this week. All primary points.
Zach Fischer – RW, Spokane Chiefs, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 17 | 9 | 7 | 16 | 11 | 10 | 9 | 22.38 |
Change from last week | 3 | 2 | 2 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 2 |
Fischer is settling in nicely with Spokane, having scored 15 points in 14 games since getting traded. Surely an early boast to make, but he’s currently outscoring Oilers first round pick Kailer Yamamoto. Still a fan of punching, by the way.
Spencer Foo – RW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 17 | 1 | 5 | 6 | 3 | 5 | 2 | 13.06 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | -0.7 |
Foo finally got off the schneid and picked up an assist this week. Maybe the floodgates are opening? Who knows.
Adam Fox – D, Harvard Crimson, ECAC
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 8 | 0 | 7 | 7 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 16.5 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -2.36 |
Harvard came back to draw with Boston College 4-4, but Fox was held off the scoresheet for the first time this season.
Glenn Gawdin – C/RW, Swift Current Broncos, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 24 | 19 | 29 | 48 | 27 | 37 | 19 | 47.56 |
Change from last week | 3 | 4 | 1 | 5 | 3 | 5 | 3 | -1.13 |
Gawdin had a great week, scoring four goals and five points. That still wasn’t enough to keep his lofty PPG ratio afloat.
Josh Healey – D, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 13 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Played in all three of Stockton’s games this week.
D’Artagnan Joly – RW, Baie-Comeau Drakkar, QMJHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 16 | 8 | 8 | 16 | 9 | 15 | 9 | 20.50 |
Change from last week | 3 | 3 | 1 | 4 | 2 | 4 | 2 | 1.58 |
Joly got back on his PPG pace, scoring three goals and adding an assist this week. All primary points, of course.
Pavel Karnaukhov – LW/C, CSKA Moscow, KHL/Zvezda, VHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
KHL current | 8 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 15.17 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -5.06 |
VHL current | 17 | 7 | 10 | 17 | 12 | 13 | 8 | 37.84 |
Change from last week | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Karnaukhov went back to the KHL again, playing in two games but not scoring anything. Will he stay there? Usually he goes right back down the next week.
Morgan Klimchuk – LW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 18 | 8 | 5 | 13 | 8 | 11 | 8 | 27.83 |
Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -0.53 |
Klimchuk is starting to score pretty consistently now, adding two more points this week.

Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -3.42 |
No points for Kylington this week. It’s been a rough few weeks for him, but hopefully he gets back to his usual self.
Linus Lindstrom – C/LW, Skelleftea AIK, SHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 22 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 4.32 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.59 |
Lindstrom played three games, recorded zero points.
Ryan Lomberg – LW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 17 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 6.8 |

No points for Lomberg this week.
Andrew Mangiapane – LW/C, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 18 | 8 | 13 | 21 | 14 | 15 | 11 | 44.96 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -9 |
No points for Mangiapane this week, the first time that’s happened this year. Not concerning, but he did go on a long drought last year. Hopefully that does not happen this year.
Mitchell Mattson – C/LW, Sioux Falls Stampede, USHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Another week, another two points for Mattsson. He’s been at least consistent, which is more than what you could say for last year’s effort.
Adam Ollas Mattsson – D, Stockton Heat

Emile Poirier – LW/RW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0.65 |
Poirier didn’t have as great a week as he did last week, but he still picked up two points, which is pretty good. Last year, he bounced between segments of great to garbage games, so consistency is nice.
This finish was a thing of beauty by Poirier. His 2nd of the year pic.twitter.com/UMw254HuuL

He’s back! Sveningsson, after disappearing for about a month, came back to the Superelit and picked up five assists in two games. He’s currently second in the Superelit in PPG, which is promising.

It’s hard to win a starting spot given how Tyler Parsons is playing, but it certainly hurts your case to allow five goals in 28 shots in your weekly appearance.

Call-up conundrum
As the title/intro details, Versteeg’s unknown status and absence from the past practice and game suggests an injury. With an extra spot and no real compelling options to go in (Lazar or Freddie?), the Flames have a chance to get a minor leaguer some minutes. I’m going to run down some of the names and what I think the probability is of them coming up:
Morgan Klimchuk: The 2013 first rounder has become one of the more intriguing prospects from that class, something no one would believe if you said that three years ago. He’s rounding out nicely in the AHL after a slow start, and he appears to be suited best for a bottom six winger spot. Given that the Flames haven’t really seen what he is, I feel he could get a shot.
Garnet Hathaway: The checking forward has become a large part of Stockton’s offence, scoring over a point per game, but I feel that’s not enough to get it done. The Flames know what they have in Hathaway, which is an energy guy who can provide an occasional spark and not much else. Given that they need to replace Versteeg, that’s not helpful. Being right-handed also hurts his case.
Marek Hrivik: I don’t track him in this column, but the Czech UFA signing has plenty to offer the Flames. Since returning from a training camp injury, Hrivik has torn up the AHL with his strong two-way play, something that has been his calling card since coming over. He’s a left-handed shot with NHL experience, who could prove that he belongs if he gets an opportunity. Pretty equal chance with Klimchuk, I’d say.
Andrew Mangiapane: Maybe one of the most exciting Flames prospects, Mangiapane’s results so far this year (minus this week) scream that he’s a guy who just needs an NHL shot to be successful. Perhaps he gets it and works his way up to the struggling third line. Although, given that Versteeg is not likely out long term (we’d hear about that if it was the case), I think the Flames keep Mangiapane tucked away for a rainy day. He probably isn’t suited to be playing with Brouwer and Stajan/Lazar/F. Ham anyways.
Emile Poirier: It’s a pretty good story, and since he’s hot right now, why not? Poirier turned some heads at camp and was in contention for a RW spot before being waived and sent down. He hasn’t seen the NHL in about two years, so like Mangiapane, he could just be a shot away from making the team. Again, I think handedness plays big into this and he stays down for now. Why mess with what’s working?
Hunter Shinkaruk: The guy has been struggling for a while, but he’s a big name that could use some confidence. The Flames recalled him last year in the wake of a Versteeg injury and he was pretty okay. They probably would like to figure out what Shinkaruk is sooner rather than later, so he’s the dark horse of the bunch. Don’t think it’s happening though.
