The Calgary Wranglers played their first of four games at home this week after coming off a three game winning streak on the road. They most recently saw the San Jose Barracuda on the road Saturday and play them on back to back nights at home. Their last meeting ended in an overtime victory but this one didn’t go Calgary’s way. San Jose got things done in regulation and won 5-3.
Lineup notes
There was some good news for Carter King going into this game. He left the last game with an injury and was unable to return but was back in the lineup for this game. He was wearing a bubble but was still able to play and contribute early. Dryden Hunt and Alex Gallant remain out with their injuries and to put the forward lines back up to 12, Carter Wilkie came in. The extra defenceman that came out was Etienne Morin.

Game at a glance
Arsenii Sergeev was back between the pipes for the Wranglers after Ivan Prosvetov posted the win against San Jose on Saturday. The Barracuda went with the same netminder as their previous game, with former Flames draft pick, Laurent Brossoit getting the nod on the visiting end. Just 2:10 into the game, the Wranglers found the back of the net with a rebound goal from Aydar Suniev. This was just the first shot of the game and the goal was assisted by Sam Morton and Carter King.
After this goal, it was pretty even back and forth between these teams. By around the 11-12 minute mark, you could tell the Barracuda were dialing up the physicality more and putting up some hard hits on guys. At 13:18, the first penalty of the game went against the Wranglers when Artem Grushnikov tripped up a San Jose skater trying to shut down a chance.
Late in the penalty kill, the Barracuda answered back with a power play goal by Lucas Carlsson. There were just four seconds left in the man advantage and he took a shot from the bottom of the offensive zone face-off circle and beat Sergeev blocker side. The Wranglers managed to put up a couple more shots before the end of the period and at the end of 20 minutes, it was a 1-1 game. Shots through the first frame were 13-9 San Jose.
The Barracuda came out hot to start the second and held most of the zone possession in the first five minutes of the frame. Rory Kerins was able to jump on a turnover and take the rush the other way, pass the puck over to Clark Bishop and Bishop set up Kerins to score the go-ahead goal at 5:18.
Rory Kerins roofs this shot to give the Wranglers the lead
The Wranglers took all the momentum back after this goal and managed to add another when Nick Cicek took a shot from the point through traffic. This goal came at exactly the 14-minute mark and was assisted by William Stromgren and Rory Kerins.
Nick Cicek put the Wranglers up 3-1 with a shot through traffic.
At 16:45, Sam Morton was caught with a high stick and Nolan Allan went to the box to give the Wranglers their first power play chance of the game. The set-ups looked good on this chance but they couldn’t get another past Brossoit. By the end of the period, the Wranglers were ahead 3-1 and narrowly outshot San Jose 9-8 in the middle frame.
The Wranglers carried some of their momentum into the third but San Jose didn’t let that last too long. At 3:19, Arsenii Sergeev was down on the ice after trying to make a save and couldn’t get back up in time to stop a shot from Braden Hache at 3:19.
Just under two minutes later, the visitors evened things up with a goal from Anthony Vincent. He was parked on the doorstep and in the perfect spot to bury the rebound. In the span of two minutes, a game the Wranglers were in full control of was back to square one and evened up on the scoreboard. They got a bit of relief at 6:31, when the Barracuda were called for a hooking penalty. Calgary got a few looks on this power play but only a couple of shots from Justin Kirkland and Aydar Suniev put them on net.
At 10:49, Anthony Vincent scored again when Jack Thompson took a shot from the point that Vincent was screening and got the last touch on. This gave the Barracuda their first lead of the game. Calgary didn’t let down after this goal and kept working the offensive zone to try and get this game back to even again. They had a run of shots then at 17:57, the Wranglers pulled Arsenii Sergeev for the extra attacker.
The Barracuda got possession back long enough to try for an empty-netter but rang it off the post. They went for it again at 19:23, and Lucas Carlsson scored on the empty net to make it 5-3. This pretty well put the bow on the game and the Wranglers snapped their three game winning streak. Shots finished 31-30 favouring the Wranglers.
Rory Kerins was the only Calgary player in the three stars, picking up the second star of the night. Kerins has eight points in his last four games and has really been bouncing off the success William Stromgren has been having.
Stromgren said after the game:
“I’ve always said Ror’s always on the right spot at the right time so you always know where to find him. I think he makes it simple for you with these small touch passes. He’s got a good shot. So whenever you get him open, in open ice, he’s probably gonna score it.”
Scoring stat summary

William Stromgren – 1A
Clark Bishop – 1A
Aydar Suniev – 1G
